Uniklubi Studiodiary, Part I
This is a translation of the recent Uniklubi Studiodiary. The band has almost finished recording their 4th album Syvään Valoon which is supposed to be out (in Finland) on March 4th 2009.
The guys recorded a video diary for myspace - which is of course in Finnish, but I did some mind-reading and took some time to write a translation. There are a few gaps and it isn't proof-read, but I guess you get the basic idea.
This is the first part as posted on their official myspace:
If not noted differently by their initial letters, it’s Teemu speaking. I added some hints to where we are in the video.
In the heading it’s not actually “sessions” but … a word I couldn’t find the right expression for XD
Annotations as always in square brackets and italics. If I get some help on the gaps I'll post this on the LJ that is noted below, too. And wherever... ^^

PART I - DRUMSESSIONS
Well, welcome to Hollola’s natural beautiful landscapes… to the well-known Petrax-studio. Let’s see what the fellows are up to do.

*Antti drumming*
From the core of the songs, we’re recording the drum-groundings here… how’s Pastori Viitala’s feeling?
P: Quite good. Really good. Fingers are always shaking.
Yeah, show how they’re shaking. *Pasi does* Just like that.
Let’s find out about the drum set, ______ [?]. So here we have some snare drums, and there we have a few more of those… that one’s better to be seen if we get a broader picture of it… *walks around to be able to show a bigger part of the room* what a hassle…
It’s good here at Petrax because the place can be changed, you can get rid of those walls [I suppose he means the partition that’s built around the drum set] so that you get a better drum sound. And now we’re going to the so called _____ [nah well that part behind the movable walls] and have a look at the drum set … That’s what it looks like now. ____ [?].
Apulanta came around yesterday. That Virtanen-guy [i.e. their singer] came around to fetch their last things because they’ve been in here before us.
It’s a bit boring in here as long as nobody plays…
*goes into the next room*
So for other activities there’s a computer here… *goes on*
This is the kitchen … *shows around* well…
From here we get to the chamber for the first time, dear people… *walks downstairs* ‘This is where the magic happens.’
J: Hey there.
How are you?
J: Good. *looks like ‘would you mind taking the camera away’ & both start laughing*
___ normally. We’re allowed to smoke in here… what sort of a special thing is that… - a fireplace which could be on every now and then… *probably mobile phone ringing*
*helium-voice* Then, for doing sports there’s the so called gym, and here we get to the sauna… how on earth does the light get on here? …So there’s the washing place… [Something about soap.] ...And the sauna. *shows* Like that. Here’s some extra wood… [He doesn’t say that but that’s what he shows]
*back to the room where Jussi was in before and saying sth I don’t understand. Showing the TV*
*changing the room, meeting Antti & the drum technician*
What are you guys doing here?
A: We just changed the bass-drum. *Drum technician shouting in the background.*
…the bass-drum, did it go… *technician still shouting* - WHAT?? *Drum technician going on shouting something like: Did you have this plastic bag on when you came to this world?*
That might well be. _____[?] . So now the bass-drum was changed … what … *drumming in the background* … what function does that have? That raises the question, why?
A: Does it?
It does.
A: It does, yeah… That is because for the next song we get a better feeling when we’re playing with a smaller bass-drum because now we have an enormous bass-drum since up to that point we were playing punk and rock. Over! THERE!!
[After that sentence, I understand why people say, “Sometimes Finnish sounds as if a sentence consists of only one word. Must’ve listened to Antti there Silmänisku by the way, this is just priceless Virnistys. I love the TUO…LLA in the end]
There’s bolts and all on it.
A: It’s a heavy drum and it gives a little different sound than the smaller one now which doesn’t sound so heavy.
Drum-technician Antti Mäkinen straight from ____. [Pariisin kahviloista? - Cafés of Paris?!]
*technician says something about a bar Friday at 8 o’clock and going there*
[Something about feeling/mood/atmosphere, and Antti agrees]
*Antti drumming*
*another room, guys sitting around, Janne playing the acoustic guitar, Jussi obviously has the camera as he asks… *
J: How’s the time in the studio been so far, guys?
Someone (?!): That’s how it goes, just fine…
[Note the different mood everyone seems to be in ~ Pasi beaming into the camera, Janne all consumed in playing, Teemu uhm… not wanting the camera either…]
J: Good.
P: [you should] say something. [The rest is not understandable because Jussi asks at the same time…]
J: What has Antti done?
A: Drumming until the break of dawn… a bit of... punk for the drums. Waiting for the next part.
*Teemu again*
Tonight we’re doing some guitars and bass and then we can record a little more…
