Juliet: The Diagnosis

Mar 19, 2008 15:05

Juliet's blood work shows that she has mild kidney disease, something that's apparently consistent with the extra drinking and occasional vomiting. The fact that she's not been vomiting with the current food is good. Her numbers: BUN is 43, and normally it should be about 30, plus or minus 5. Creatinine is 2.3. High normal is 2.4, and the vets worry if it goes above 1. They still want a urine sample to see what her urine concentration is, but that can be done later. If she vomits a lot, I get to cut a Pepsid antacid into 4 parts and give her 1/4 of a pill a day.

For the moment, we're trying a low protein diet with kitty prescription food(!) which may be cheaper at Petco, according to the vet. They apparently can make up special diets. We'll try wet food, but I'm not holding my breath there! She's been adamant all her 16 years that the wet stuff isn't food, and I doubt she'll change much now!

So, off to the vet for samples to see what she'll eat!
