He watched them as they spent every moment together, just as he knew they would from the very moment each of them came into being. He watched as Michael would shelter his younger brother in the cover of his wings, and he watched as Lucifer’s light shone brighter than all of those in Heaven.
He watched them both, watched their happiness … and he dreaded the day when he knew it would all come to an end.
But such, he knew, was the way things were meant to be. And as he watched the two sons he loved most, he wished that day back once more.
Time, however, had other plans. And the earth had need of its occupants, the ones who would make it their home and tend to it just as he hoped. Thus, he did what was needed, and humanity came into being.
And such was the start of the end.
And he watched as it all fell apart.

Michael found Lucifer sitting on the edges of Heaven, just where he knew he would. The younger angel hadn’t been spending much time anywhere else lately, after all, his whole attention focused solely on what had happened with the creation of mankind.
“Father wishes to see you,” said Michael, taking a seat beside his brother when Lucifer ignored the statement. He turned to face him. “Some of the others are wondering where you’ve been hiding, too.”
Lucifer’s only acknowledgment of Michael’s words was to turn his head briefly to look at the eldest of the archangels, before leaning into him. “You knew where to find me.”
Michael grinned. “I know you better than anyone else, Lucifer. That doesn’t count.” His wings expanded to wrap around both him and Lucifer. “So, why are you all the way out here again?”
“Just …” He fell off into silence, until a push from Michael brought Lucifer’s attention back to the question. “I was just thinking about it all.”
“Lucifer …”
Lucifer partially leaned away from Michael, yet still stayed within his brother’s embrace. “I just - I don’t understand it. Why them?”
Michael sighed and ran a hand through Lucifer’s hair, cupping the younger’s face. “Just go and talk to Father, little brother,” he said. “I’m sure he’ll have your answers.”
Nodding, Lucifer rose from the ground, tearing himself away from Michael reluctantly and beginning to head towards the center of Heaven. “But Michael,” he said, turning back to face his brother, who had stayed where the two of them had been, “you do agree with me, don’t you? That this … it doesn’t make any sense?”
The elder angel smiled. “I’ll always be on your side, Lucifer,” he said. “And nothing can change that. You know that already, little brother.”

The bindings burned into his Grace as the Seals were locked in place. Enochian markings carved upon the bonds themselves kept them solid; the symbols around the edges of the cage hid him from the rest of the darkest pits of Hell.
But before that last symbol was put in place, before the last Seal was locked, their gazes met.
The little brother glared at the elder, the words of broken promises and the sting of betrayal searing into him just as strongly as the bindings themselves.
“You promised,” said Lucifer, staring at Michael’s blank face.
Michael turned and walked away, his brother’s screams echoing around him.
