Slash rating:
This charming and warm story of Sherlock and John spending Christmas with Sherlock's dysfunctional family is packed full of excellent characterisation, careful attention to detail, humour, some tense moments that last for just the right amount of time and an ending that will leave you wanting to read more from this writer.
Sherlock, John, Mycroft and Anthea all have depth and remain in character throughout the fic. Both the dialogue between and the way in which the characters interact with one another are excellent and remain true to Moff & Gatiss's version. This entire fic feels like an actual episode, you can clearly hear the voices and see each one of them, so carefully are they written here.
Sherlock and John have an understanding of one another without having to voice their thoughts. Sherlock being socially awkward. Sherlock & Mycroft bickering. Sherlock deducing their relationship to John like it's a case. John reaching the realisation that perhaps there is something more to the relationship between him and Sherlock after all. These are just a few of the points in the fic which keep the reader engaged and engrossed.
The oc, Aracelia, the mother of Sherlock and Mycroft is incredibly well written, interesting, fully fleshed out and totally believable.
If you are not a fan of“fluff” you may not be tempted to read this fic. Although the author has categorised it as “fluff” the characters, particularly of Sherlock and John, remain in character throughout, the dialogue remains realistic-as we know them from the series-and doesn't become cloying or saccharin as is often the case with “fluff”. Go read!
