A heart that hurts (is a heart that works) is a post-apocalypse fic, taking place somewhere after Lucifer's rising but before season 5 happened. It doesn't deal much with the apocalypse, but is more a tale of how four different people are suddenly forced to live under different cicumstances than they are used to. Dean has made a deal with the angels which sees Castiel being given his freedom to live life on Earth as a human. At the same time Castiel's vessel's daughter Claire finds herself an orphan and is taken in by the makeshift family of Dean, Sam and Cas (and Bobby).
Enigmatic-blue does an especially wonderful job at describing the interaction between Claire and the man who looks like, but isn't her father anymore, in a very believable fashion. Claire's reluctance to accept Castiel and in turn Castiel's regret and pain at what he's caused is very heartbreaking to behold. While the relationship betweeen Castiel and Claire is written very convincingly, the realtionship between Cas and Dean does seem to happen quite suddenly as we are given no explanation of Dean's sudden physical attraction to the former angel. There are also a few times where the author skates a bit easily over certain details in the plot, especially concerning the adoption of Claire. The fact that Claire contacted Dean exactly one day after Cas had been found even though he had been gone for a year also seem a bit forced.
There are well-defined changes in pov between Dean and Cas and the story is well-written with very few grammatical errors. It is posted in 8 parts and unfortunately it lacks links for the next part at the bottom of each chapter, so that the reader has to go back to the previous page and scroll up to click to the next part. But overall the story is very well-written, engaging, with believable characters and plot and highly recommended.
