Slash rating:

To be clear from the start, the writer does warn for violence, but does not specify what that entails, perhaps for reasons of impact. Had the warning been there, this may have been a fic that I would not have chosen to read, but then I would have missed out on this well-written, engrossing and outstanding piece of writing. On the other hand, I do believe that had a warning been in place it wouldn't have detracted from the impact. Understandably a hard decision to make-to warn or not to warn. (Noted in comments following the fic on the writers LJ that they did not wish to warn, so I will not be explicit about the nature of the “violence” here-read at your own discretion).

This excellent fic is an exploration of Sherlock's psyche, his self-confessed sociopathy which isn't really explored in the BBC series (other than to give him licence to be an arse when it's fitting), but here, this writer chooses to delve into the darker, more threatening side of his personality. Told from Sherlock's point of view, the writer portrays a possessive and for the most part in his own mind, aggressive Sherlock. He is needy, he needs John's constant attention, needs to know why and is obsessed with how John could have become an intrinsic part of his life. Sherlock's inner thoughts have been written with a cold and clinical intensity, yet the writer manages to capture glimpses of tenderness from Sherlock towards John.

This dysfunctional relationship is not one-sided. John, himself a somewhat troubled character is to be found in the background in this story. He is quiet, patiently waiting for Sherlock to catch up, however, so cleverly written his presence is clearly noticed, never being consumed by Sherlock's pervading, dynamic presence. Totally in character, John gives his complete trust to Sherlock throughout the story, no matter how dark and threatening Sherlock may appear to the outside world. He is never afraid to pull Sherlock up for his “ bit not good” behaviour.

Unfortunately there are a few typo's and several instances of non-British spelling in this fic which I find very distracting and it is for this purpose that I give it 4 slashes rather than 5.

There is some disturbing imagery in this fic but it is used to such good effect that when the conclusion is reached it is absolutely believable. Not converted to this particular genre, I am however, glad that I read it as it is one of the most powerful and intense studies of Sherlock's sociopathy that I have seen in this fandom. So, if you love darkfic and don't mind some “violence” then you should not miss this one.
