Right so I was just looking at my flist and saw that
fencer_x is going to Japan!! Which is a great thing for her, even if I haven't spoken to her that much. It's a very good thing. Anyways, that made me go see what JET was all about. I've seen her writing about it, along with some others, and although I knew it was some sort of exchange program, I didn't know exactly what it was. So I went to find out.
And...
!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to do that. I mean love. I've been looking into doing some sort of study abroad or exchange sort of thing, and that is just perfect. For one, it's in Japan. I've always wanted to go there because it just fascinates me. I'll admit it doesn't take much to interest me, but it really does fascinate me. It's an Eastern culture, which is so different from ours, and not third world or underdeveloped. Two, it's involved in teaching, which is what I want to do. Now admittedly working with an English teacher isn't what I'm planning on, but it's still teaching or helping to teach. And three, it's first hand experience of a culture. How amazing is that? I spent five weeks in Bosnia last summer, and that was great. I loved learning about the culture and all that by actually being there. I'm a history major with an Asian minor, and I'd love to spend a year in Japan helping teach.
Now comes the hard part. What the heck do I do to get to be a part of this? I read what the website said and I know it, but I'd still like more information. The biggest problem that I have is language. I don't know a lick of Japanese. I'm going to be studying it formally starting next year, but what could I start doing now? And also, I never learned English grammar. I can write well because I've read so much, but don't ask me what a direct object is. I've learned a lot through learning Spanish (I do know somewhat what a direct object is now) and through reading so many fics (especially being over on FA, where grammar is stressed). I can tell if something isn't right most of the time, but I can't explain it. I don't know how important that stuff is, but I would think it would be. If you're assisting an English teacher, then you should know that stuff right? And is it something anyone can do? By that I mean there are some things you're usually recruited for based on performance. I didn't see anything about that but still. So many questions in my head right now.
These are just my first thoughts and ramblings on this subject. I could be just dreaming here, but I'd love to do that program. I've been so up in the air about what I wanted to do that this gives me some direction. I knew I wanted to teach, but at the same time I want to go places. I don't know if I have a chance with this, I'd think it's hard to get into, but I'm willing to work.
And that's the end of my ramblings. My mind's so chaotic right now that who knows how that all came out. Usually I'd wait to post until I'd thought about this more and had my thoughts in order, but I didn't want to. I don't like to sound like a silly dreamer, but right now I could care less.
