Yuletide Letter 2013

Oct 07, 2013 15:05

So we get up to six requests in Yuletide this year? I suppose I will magnanimously use all six. You know, to make matching easier ;-)

General Information
Hello and thank you for writing me a story! I love you already.

I have a yuletide tag where all my old yuletide posts live, if you're looking for more inspiration. All my previous thoughts still apply, especially the general likes/dislikes/tropes!

As for this year, I'll give you a basic list:

Likes: I like pairings of all flavours, and genfic as well. It's all good. Sexytimes can hit any rating you think works for the story, although I like some plot with my porn (even if it's just a little). I don't usually mention it, but since it's relevant to my prompts this year: I actually do like reading stories about pregnancy, and yes, mpreg is a-okay with me! (This will make sense in a minute.)

Dislikes: Please nothing too gory or violent. Suitable amounts are fine in appropriate fandoms (say, Gil's All Fright Diner) but nothing graphic, svp.

Decoys
My Request: Constance Snowden, Roger. I'm straight-up looking for fix-it fic with this request. What if Roger hadn't died?

I settled my choice to request Decoys last year when I rewatched the movie and concluded that Luke was no longer a victim by the end of it. The real turning point for me was the scene where Roger volunteers to breed with Constance. When I watched the movie I knew that wasn't going to turn out well, not just because it's a horror film and I've watched my fair share, but because I knew Luke wasn't going to listen. Sure enough, Luke barged right in and things went to hell.

Ficwise I'm all about Constance/Roger. I'd love to see what would happen if Roger hadn't died, including him having all their little alien babies. How would that work? How the hell would Luke react? I believe Constance and Roger really did love each other, and I'd like to see how that would work out for them.

If you don't want to write about Roger actually going through with the pregnancy, I will gladly accept an exploration of his thoughts set before his death. What was going through Roger's head when he decided to let Constance impregnate him? How afraid was he that he was going to die, and why did he decide to do it anyway? What did either of them think was going to happen if it did work - during the pregnancy or afterwards? (I've seen the sequel, by the way, and as far as I'm concerned you can ignore it in regards to these questions.)

Alien Nation
My request: Any. My favourite thing about the show is the development of Newcomer culture, and I'd love more of it. Maybe expand on something we learned about on the show? Or maybe Matt and Cathy experience some culture shock in their relationship?

I love this show a lot, even if its messages are sometimes a teeny bit heavy handed. The writers really did their best to show the Newcomer culture as detailed and nuanced, which I loved, but the absolute best part was how they tried to make it clear that there wasn't just one monolithic Newcomer culture. Most obviously they did this with religions (I especially liked that Uncle Moodri followed a different faith than George's family. It really highlighted the variety). Fic that touched on this aspect of the show would be awesome. I like culture shock siutations (like in human/Newcomer relationships, or with older characters) but you know what else would be cool? The perspectives of one of the younger characters like Emily or even Vessna, who grew up among humans.

The show also made a point of having biological differences between humans and Newcomers, which included the sort of complicated Newcomer reproduction system. If you wanted to write about that I'd be thrilled. Take binnaums - on the show we find out that they traditionally lived separate, in religious orders, but they only mention one religion when talking about it. Do other faiths also have binnaums live apart, or are all binnaums raised in the same faith, or . . . ? What about Newcomer women who grew up among human culture where their peers think being catalyzed is something weird or kinky - do they end up awkward and uncomfortable about it where their mothers saw it as obvious and normal? Bringing this back to specific characters: Cathy once suggested to Matt that Albert and George could help them have a baby. What would Matt's thoughts be on that if it actually came up?

Gil's All Fright Diner
My request: Any. The Continuing Adventures of a Ghost, a Werewolf, and a Vampire As They Roadtrip Across America. Or The Previous Adventures of a Werewolf and a Vampire As They Roadtrip Across America. Or give me all the Hector fic, really. What's it like to be a "metaphysical scholar" and does he have a vast network of people calling him for help? I see him as the Bobby of Gil's All Fright Diner, if you'll excuse the Supernatural analogy.

This was the first A. Lee Martinez book I read, and it's stuck with me. It has such potential for a sequel, but that doesn't seem to interest Martinez. It really interests me, though, so if you wanted to write some post (or pre) book adventures . . . ? I would take straight-up "what happened in Las Vegas" fic, or something about Duke and Earl's early days together, or seriously anything about Hector. How did Duke and Earl meet him? When does he get to meet Cathy?

If you like writing crossovers, I think this fandom would be particularly good for one, particularly because the characters canonically travel all over North America. If you think a specific canon would work well crossed over with this one, I say go for it. You have my permission to not worry about whether I know the other fandom!

Cryptozoology RPF
My request: Any. When I was a kid I wanted to be a cryptozoologist. Talk about adventure! I'd really like a story about one or more cryptozoologists out in the field, maybe coming across a cryptid? I'd love to see Jimmy Stewart included if you could, since he proved himself willing to get roped into cryptozoological intrigue - maybe a story where he was an actor by day, cryptozoologist by night?

I chose people from the classic era of cryptozoology when I nominated this fandom because I'm not looking for the modern day notion of cryptid hunting, where the sasquatch is lumped in with ghosts in terms of believability and you have reality TV shows about it. I'm looking for adventures about people who aren't sure whether these cryptids are real or not, but are going out to prove it one way or another. I'm thinking something like Indiana Jones, but with a yeti instead of the holy grail.

I included Jimmy Stewart (yes, the actor) after reading about his involvement in smuggling this artifact out of Nepal. Apparently he was totally willing to help his adventurer/cryptozoologist friend steal potential yeti remains, so I can only imagine what else he might have done! I'd rather not get a story about that specific event, since they were stealing a cultural artifact and that's kind of awful, but if you want to expand on Jimmy's extracurricular adventures, please do!

And one last thing about this request. You know what fandom has thematic similarities and could overlap timewise with this? Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Newt and a cryptozoologist hunting the same cryptid. It could happen!

Rewind (2013)
My request: Priya Bristol. Priya being super competent and saving the day? Priya femslash? Priya rising to the challenge and going through the window herself?

Oh my god, someone nominated Rewind! And they included Priya! \o/ I watched this pilot not so long ago after noticing it on Keisha Castle-Hughes' IMDb page. I'm bummed the show didn't get picked up, to be honest, because I think it would've been sort of like Stargate SG-1 and I loved SG-1.

I was watching the show for Priya, of course, and was thrilled when she turned out to be the team historian. That's so cool, and I love the way she would watch video from the window and piece together the time period based on all the little clues she picked up because she knew what to look for. My competence kink, let me show you it.

One thing I noticed in the pilot that probably would have been expanded in the show: Priya was talking to (presumably) her son on the phone, right? So . . . only the people in their little bunker are unaffected by the time changes, right? Yet they have friends and family outside, like Priya's son. The show was totally going to touch on that! I was convinced pretty quickly that Priya's son was going to get blinked out of existence, and if you want to write something where that happens and she gets him back through her superior historical knowledge: go for it!

Less traumatic time change ideas include: The team saves the day but accidentally changes something so now everyone outside thinks Priya and Lyndsay are married. The team saves the day and somehow changes something so Priya and her son's father are still together . . . and have more kids. The team changes something and suddenly the higher ups think Priya is in charge of the whole operation.

The Almighty Johnsons
My request: Gaia. I'd prefer something set during or after season three. What happens on her travels abroad? How is she effected by the events of the season finale? If you're interested in writing sexytimes, I love Gaia/Anders like burning, but Gaia/OCs (gender up to you!) while she's travelling would also be hot.

I've fallen for Gaia hard since starting this series, and I was bummed about her leaving the show (although I'm excited for Keisha Castle-Hughes apparently moving to LA? I hope she gets some awesome roles!). I definitely want more of her, and isn't that the sort of thing Yuletide is for?

I loooved how the show set up a dichotomy between the gods and the hosts' desires. I loved it with Ty and Dawn, but oh man did I love it with Gaia and Axl and Anders. On the one hand, the "gods made them do it" irresistible lust of Gaia/Anders in the face of their personal distaste for each other was totally up my alley. On the other hand, how much did I love Gaia asserting her own feelings over Idunn's? First she fights to maintain her relationship with Axl, and then she removes herself from the situation altogether.

Honestly, I don't know what kind of story would be more appealing: Gaia putting all the god stuff behind her and reestablishing her own identity outside of New Zealand, or Gaia moving beyond her initial rejection of Idunn to form a new (balanced) composite identity? (I like how the show did this with Ty, for example.) And whichever way Gaia goes . . . how does that effect her story after the season three finale?

yuletide
