Ashley watches the exchange from afar. Sitting only behind the kitchen counter, she may as well be looking across a chasm.
Such a charming morning ritual. Christine, coffee cup in hand, rubs a smudge from Kyla's cheek. But her sister is not her mother’s daughter.
Ashley sighs, related by blood and her mother's eyes hold no affection for her - can't begin to imagine how that would feel.
And so at night, when they're alone, when she is lying here, in her arms, she follows Spencer’s lead. Mimics her actions. Hopes this learned behaviour is enough. A worthy substitute. For kindness.
