Title:
What She Keeps Hidden
Andie wears long sleeves every day. Even when it’s a hundred degrees out and the wind off the desert’s like the air out of an oven, she keeps her arms covered.
But human bodies do what human bodies do, and sweaty clothes aren’t all that comfortable to work in. So, after a pick-up (a lost hiker? A dumped body? She’ll have a better idea in a couple of hours) she changes her shirt in the locker room.
Usually, no-one comes in, but today is different.
“Oh, god. Sorry-”
Andie glances over her shoulder at the person who walked in on her.
“Hardly anything you haven’t seen before,” she points out, reaching for the clean shirt she keeps in her locker.
There might come a time - when they’re more comfortable being around each other - when Sara would smile her “I’m embarrassed that you know that about me” smile at the reminder, but not yet.
She rolls her eyes.
“The context was a little different then,” she points out, trying not to look.
Andie buttons the shirt.
“You’re safe now.”
Sara looks back at Andie, who is buttoning the cuff of one sleeve.
“…What’s that?” she asks, reaching for Andie’s wrist.
She turns Andie’s hand palm-up, and the unbuttoned cuff falls open revealing a long, white scar stretching half-way to her elbow from her wrist.
She meets Andie’s eyes, half shocked, half accusing.
“Why-?”
Andie pulls her hand away. “It wasn’t because of you.”
