Small Truths
Sara’s breath slows, and she buries her face in Catherine’s hair. She smells like strawberry shampoo and sweat, and Sara wraps her arms tight around Catherine’s body, kisses her ear, her temple, as the tremors of her aftershocks come to rest. Catherine strokes Sara’s thighs, the fingers of her right hand still sticky. She tilts her head, so that Sara can kiss her neck.
Sara strokes Catherine’s hair, her mouth moving on Catherine’s skin.
Don’t let go, Sara thinks, and knows that she cares too much.
This doesn’t mean anything, Catherine thinks, and knows that her thought is a lie.

Title:
The Day Things Started to Change
Picture this: A Saturday afternoon in September, with the sun slanting through the clouds. Picture a student apartment a few blocks from the university. There are a couple of second-hand patio-chairs sitting on the balcony, and a cherry-tomato plant grows out of a pot, with basil and chives at its roots. See the double bed and the pictures on the walls.
Look in the galley-kitchen. A tall woman is making grilled cheese sandwiches in the frying pan. There are dishes in the sink left over from yesterday, and she looks at them and rolls her eyes, but isn’t too worried about them yet. Hear Ani Defranco blasting on the CD player, and hear, too, the woman in the kitchen singing along despite the fact that she can’t quite carry the tune.
She turned twenty-one in August and has snuck a bottle of champagne into the house to surprise her girlfriend with - not today, maybe not even this month. Maybe she’ll open it on their second anniversary.
She hears the key in the lock, and smiles the silly, besotted smile of someone who’s in love and doesn’t care who sees it.
“Hey, Babe,” she calls from the kitchen. “What took you?”
The woman in the doorway, who is nineteen, sets her bag of groceries on the floor.
“I ran into one of my TAs, asked him to clear some stuff up.”
“Okay,” she says. “You want a sandwich?”
The younger woman comes into the kitchen and kisses her.
“Love one.”

Over
They’d renewed their lease.
What had they been thinking?
Andie doesn’t come out of her bedroom - her bedroom, not their bedroom - much. Sara tries her best to just stay away.
She’s put up signs at the student co-op and the grocery store, looking for a sub-letter. She wants to be gone as soon as possible. She feels claustrophobic in their appartment, the office (now her bedroom - ha!) that’s more like a closet, the kitchen that can only fit one person comfortably, the fridge that has to hold twice as much food - two milk jugs, two cartons of eggs - now that they aren’t sharing anymore.
Andie’s not in her bedroom right now. She’s out on the balcony, next to the cherry-tomato plant, smoking another cigarette with her back resolutely to the door.
Sara’s in the living room, studying Crim. Psych., and feeling like a trespasser. She’s long-since broken it off with the guy - the TA - she’d been screwing around with.
But it’s too late now.
Sara has her pride, and won’t say “I was wrong.”
And Andie has her pride, and won’t forgive her for it.
