don't let sleeping Fwd's lie

Sep 23, 2005 19:42

I wanted to post this, and x-post this, to a few of my communities in the hopes of encouraging everyone not to just simply delete those annoying misinformed and right-wing forwards accidentally passed on to us radical liberals from time to time...

Read the e-mail.
Respond with logic and tact.
Copy the list of addresses it went out to and blast them back with your response.

and

First of all, I don't like this message except for the small bit of
moral advice about not judging someone: unfortunately, this is a
right-wing propaganda message in disguise, chock-full of judgement.

On Question 1: It's not my nor anyone's (but a woman's doctor perhaps
in the case of rape, incest, or threat to the women's life) place to
"reccommend" abortions. This decsion is up to the individual woman
and her individual circumstance. I support and "recommend" a world
where a woman has the ability to make a *choice* about her own body,
irregardless of her past and in support of a sustainable and healthy
future.

This question of hypothetically "killing" people who are already alive
(or even yourself: "What if YOUR mom had an abortion?!") is a tactic
used by anti-choice people all the time, the most amusing of which
came from a priest who used the example of Celine Dion's mother
aborting her since she had had like 8 kids already. After replying
that "Titanic" would've had a better theme song, I countered and gave
him a taste of his own tactics with a "What if Hitler's mother had had
an abortion? How many people wouldn't have been 'killed' then?" That
got him quiet really quick.

Speaking of Hitler, this doesn't mean I would even "recommend" killing
anyone, even the birth-defected Beethoven (deaf) or the non-smoking,
vegetarian Hitler. This "war hero" that never cheated on his wife
just also happened to consider being 1/4 Jewish a 'congenital defect'
incompatible with "the right to life" and then "recommended" killing
millions of people.

Secondly, this second question of political leaders' pasts is an
interesting one: Did you not notice how the two "bad" candidates
happen to be two of the most influential liberal political leaders of
all time? What of Bush's past? Or Nixon's? Or any [Republican]
senator's for that matter?

Thirdly, about "trying something new," do you really believe Noah
built the ark and the animals marched two-by-two into his big ol'
boat? Every species known to man?? C'mon...this isn't Fantasia II.
Professionals also built the world trade center. And "amateur"
terrorists tried something new and destroyed it, killing thousands of
innocent people in the name of their "God." This argument makes no
sense.

Finally, this last line reflects the typical right-wing Republican
fear of "big government" and paranioa of corruption. THIS, my friend,
is the one and ONLY thing of this whole e-mail that I DO happen to
agree with them on.

So just rememember to go deeper than what's on the surface of e-mails
like these before you "pass it on...."
