Request for women-positive college event ideas

Sep 21, 2005 20:32

My college's feminist organization is looking for a few positive events that we could hold on campus. We're at a small, mostly conservative, private university in South Carolina. In the past, we've discovered that shock tactics do not work at all. We've also noticed that a good many of our events and activities on campus are rather negative in ( Read more... )

Do you ever have anyone abuse the access to the microphone? Is it open to anyone or do you have speakers predetermined?

Love Your Body Day

Make pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness and pass them out.

Host a round table discussion on what it means to be a woman in the 21st century.

Have a women's book club.

Thanks :)

I think we did red ribbons for sexual violence around the time we did Vagina Monologues last year.

I'm almost positive there's a breast cancer bracelet. Lemme see if I can find out about it.

There are a few here:

Though I can't figure out where they send their money and whether it goes to non-profit places.

Yeah I'd prefer a non-profit to at least get part of the money, especially if the bracelet is charity-oriented.

I kinda like their "Speak up. Stand up." bracelet though. ;)

Thank you! Those all sound like great ideas. I'm at Furman University, which, up until 1992ish, was funded by the Southern Baptist Convention, so it's definitely very conservative. It's still predominantly Christian (and predominantly Baptist). We do have foreign/exchange students and some minorities, but it's definitely mostly (probably at least 75%) Christian Caucasians. I think we could look into working with our International Student Association and the Student League for Black Culture for possible collaboration ( ... )

i'd love to hear about your condom problems... our campus was founded by the sisters of saint josephine of carondolet. basically, we are a college "based in the catholic tradition." regardless, condoms are not available at all. i want to change the policy but as a senior with student teachign in the spring, it seems i will be leaving school with no such change made. :(

Why abstinence-only education sucks... squinting_kitty September 27 2005, 04:55:10 UTC
Well, if it makes you feel any better, Feminist Initiative and Queer Student Alliance have been trying to change the condom policy for YEARS. I know one year prior to me coming here (I'm a sophomore this year), the president of QSA sat in the University President's office for most of a day just to be able to pass out condoms at one event. (He refused to leave until the President said yes.) That event was either a day or a week I think.

Last year we passed around a petition with signatures before meeting with the Trustees. This is basically what they decided. (This was written by a student on the committee informing the rest of us about what transpired.)

As you know, this weekend the Trustees deliberated the issue of condom distribution. First of all, I want to quickly thank Molly, Joe, Stacie and Chris for a doing such a fine job articulating both sides of the issue to the Student Services committee. Following the student presentations, the trustees deliberated the issue for nearly an hour, in debate that closely echoed many of ( ... )

This isn't how I got mine, but here's one link: http://www.pplm.org/bracelets_choice.html
You might want to do a Google search to see if there's a simpler way of just ordering on the Internet. I think I got mine by just going to plannedparenthood.org and there was a "store" link, but now it seems to have disappeared.
