Okay, so we just got back from seeing Order of the Phoenix for the, ahem, second time. Yes, we went opening night at midnight and then again tonight, though at the 9:00 instead of the later. I am officially just as happy the second time as I was the first time. My thoughts on the movie - just for the sake of posterity - are in the paragraphs below. This is purely my own interpretation and likes/dislikes. I'd love to hear anyone's comments.
Favorite scene:
Harry possesed by Voldemort and the battle of the wills that ensues. I thought this was easily the most powerful and moving scene in the whole film. The look of Dumbledore on his knees, helplessly watching as Harry fought for his life, was very powerful. It was made even more so as the camera panned out and we saw all of his friends run into the room and come to a stop at the scene in front of them, not even believing what was happening.
Character development:
Harry - Better than ever. He's growing up, and while he's a bit angry with his friends at times, it's at least understandable, given what he's going through. His relationship with Sirius is very well played and very believable.
Ron - I like Ron and it's sad that he didn't get more time. He did an outstanding job backing up Harry as a true friend through-and-through.
Hermione - As always, she's done a fine job showing her upset emotions. I only wish she was just a bit less snotty and more of a bookworm.
Neville - Best yet. He's definately grown into his character and we see him evolving before our very eyes.
Luna - Perfect. Enough said.
Ginny - This is more the Ginny we know from the books. She much less shy, more confident, has more than two lines, has grown up, and has shown she's equal to the task of becoming one of the "trio". I love the fact that the film gives a couple of nods to her feelings for Harry without making a big deal of it. This Ginny really makes me excited to see the next movie!
Biggest dislike:
Okay, we know that witches and wizards can apparate. What they DO NOT do is fly around like clouds of white and black, disappearing in a smokescreen only to buzz across the room with a trail of smoke and attack someone else. The fight between the Order and the DEs was disappointing, mostly because it's just a bunch of black and white clouds flitting around the room. We don't even get to hear what spells they're using.
What I wish they hadn't left out:
I wish they would have included two short scenes. 1) The small celebration at the beginning after Harry's hearing, when the charges are dropped. 2) All the Weasleys sitting around Grimmauld Place waiting for news of Mr. Weasley after his attack at the Ministry. Neither of these scenes would have added much time and they sure would have improved things, in my opinion.
Overall, it was an excellent film (seeing as how we watched it twice already) and I think this may be my most favorite movie so far! You can tell I'm happy because it's 12:22 a.m. and I'm excited enough to type all of this!
