Anyone familiar with Amazon's CreateSpace? Not the fanfiction publishing thingy (I know that's got problems) but the regular book selfpublishing thingy. My teacher was at this writers/publishers conference last month and Amazon really made an effort of convincing people they were the best thing since sliced bread in regards to publishing. He was ( Read more... )

My friend Joe just had her first book published --both ebook and paperback!

Also, she has awesome fan fiction as well in Fast n Furious, Hawaii Five-O and Losers.

My friend Paula, who runs our local writer's group (20 years now), has published her books through create space and she's been very happy with it. I'm trying to get a couple books edited and up there. You can choose the price of the book, I believe, so it doesn't have to be too expensive. Success seems to depend on how much marketing you do yourself and word-of-mouth recommendations. Paula does a lot of local book signings, etc. Most of her sales are ebook ( ... )

If you consider going for traditional publishing, you'll definitely need to contact agents first because there's not really another way into the big publishing houses other than that.
The self-pub option seems like not too bad a fit because you already have a kind of fan following for the novel i.e. people who be interested in it and probably willing to generate promotion. I can't speak from personal experience whether or not Amazon is the best option, but they're certainly the largest and most prolific slice of the market which has both advantages and disadvantages. You're actually the third of my friends I'll point towards Chuck Wendig and his blog 'terribleminds' in the past couple of weeks, he's a published author - both traditional and self-pub - in Fantasy and writing-meta and he's had some spirited discussions about publishing and newbie authors breaking into the business these past few weeks, I think you'll find a lot of useful stuff there.

Like mentioned above, I think Doors will do well because so many of us around here are eager to buy it at some point, and that is one of the hardest things about self publishing; marketing and getting found.

Have you tried to promote it around to some of the US markets? Maybe look into Writer's Market to see places that you can send it (e-mail sending), and at least give that a try for a bit first.
