I certainly think publishing on a platform like CreateSpace is something to consider, but only for the right reasons. If you think self-publishing is for you, then it's a great tool.

But do you reeeeeeally want to self publish? What it boils down to is do you want to be a *publisher*? If you want full control of the content, the cover design, the format, the promotion and you want 100% of your royalties, if you think you have the time and ability to handle all of that and if you think the book is edited to a publishable standard, then go for it.

But if you are looking to self-pubbing because you are daunted by the industry, I would say proceed with caution. I agree that getting a big six (five now) deal is nigh on impossible. BUT there are loads of smaller and indie presses out there which may be interested in your work. Yes, they will take a cut of your sales, yes, they will want some creative control, but in return you get professional editors, designers and a marketing team all striving to make your book as good as it can be. And you get experience and make contacts which is invaluable.

If I remember correctly, your book is YA, GLBT-themed, magic realism, is that right? If so I might know a good fit...
