Last week we celebrated Cinco de Pie-O, as has become our tradition, with homemade pizza pie and Margaritas. This year Kevin made Midori margaritas and they were outstanding, as was the pie.

On Saturday, we took my mother-in-law out on the town ("the town" being Woonsocket, RI). We had dinner at Chan's, a local institution, then walked around and observed some unusual birds at a nearby park. Kevin's younger sister used to call them "turkey ducks", since they are huge and resemble a duck crossed with a turkey, and his older sister knew them as "witch ducks" in another part of the country. However, Kevin and I had never encountered them before and were naturally fascinated. He snapped a few photos with his cell phone, but I think a return trip with a proper camera is in order.

The evening culminated with a performance by The Fab Faux, just as outstanding as the previous two times I saw them. Jimmy Vivino was absent, as he is currently on tour with Conan O'Brien, but at least we'll be seeing him at that show next month. Jim Boggia sat in for Jimmy and impressed me with his voice; he's a power pop artist I will definitely seek out more from. Jack Petruzelli took over much of the lead guitar work that Jimmy usually handles, and he brought the crowd to its feet with his guitar solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", not to mention his vocals on "Oh! Darling" and his sitar playing. If you love The Beatles, you owe it to yourself to see this band!

Sunday we attended a special Boston Skeptics in the Pub featuring the delightful Jon Ronson. Ronson talked about the events that led him to write the book The Men Who Stare at Goats and answered questions about other current and past projects in his trademark self-deprecating style. I knew he had contributed to This American Life; what I did not know is that this inspired him to launch a program for BBC radio, Jon Ronson On..., in much the same style. I will definitely be checking this out!
