#016 Television and Memories

SUPERNATURAL

I used to watch an actual television once, you know; with scheduled programs and ad breaks and everything. Sometimes, in these breaks, they would show commercials for other shows that might appeal to the current audience. I used to get all my television recommendations from a television, which seems a little weird now, but at least it was easier.

So imagine it is 2005: Gilmore Girls is off Australian television, and I am -- look, I don't even know what I was watching in 2005. Maybe it was Veronica Mars? that would fit the audience demographic. So I am watching Veronica Mars, and an ad for a new show comes on. You can probably guess what for.

It is an ad for Supernatural.

And I get kind of excited! DEAN IS BACK ON TV*. Except that his name is not Dean! But his brother is named Dean? THIS CONFUSES ME BUT OKAY. I make a mental note about the premiere date, and life goes on.

Up until ten minutes ago, I thought I had actually sat down at the designated date and time to watch episode one. But upon googling, I realise I actually ended up watching the 11th episode - "Scarecrow" (I know this because the only thing I remember about it was that the opening scene contained a Scarecrow and it was incredibly terrifying).

So I guess I must have forgotten/not been able to catch a single Supernatural episode for over two months. Which is crazy! I must have had a lot of school work? I did start going to parties around that time, but trust me, I enjoy watching television 10x more than I enjoy parties. Parties are the worst -- all those people, and loud awful music. Alcohol is nice though.

But I'm getting off track. I think the fact that I jumped in mid-season (apparently without even realising?!) contributes to the fact that I thought the episode was terrifying but also boring, which is two things I hate. How can something even be both terrifying and boring? I don't know. I don't know! Maybe the episode picked up after the first ten or fifteen minutes, but I never stuck around to find out.

It turns out a lot of people like Supernatural - I really missed this bandwagon. A few years ago, while talking books and television over coffee, one of my oldest friends was shocked to find out I'd never watched a complete episode of the show.

"you should watch it! it is so good!"
"I know! I've seen the tumblr .gifs"
"yes! tumblr .gifs are the tits!"
"I feel like I've already seen the bits I would find amusing though. in .gif form"
"noo! you should start watching it for real!"
"you should stop reblogging so much porn!"
"...no"

and then a few months later, I wrote this for her.

I may eventually begin watching the show, but for now I am content to understand it peripherally, via crazy tumblr fangirls.

* Jared Padalecki played the *iconic* role of Dean Forrester in Gilmore Girls, which was the only role I knew him for at that point. I was basically in love with him in the early 2000's, even though he was clearly a wet blanket. I shouldn't even have to explain this, just watch Gilmore Girls.
