More on HBO's Rome

I have watched three episodes of Rome Season 1 by now. The library discs have many scratches, so they cannot be played smoothly. I had to restart the disc player from time to time. Annoying!

I still found original characters like Lucius Virenus and Titus Pullo more watchable than the more famous characters, such as Caesar, Magnus or Mark Antony.

RS also plays Volstagg in the Thor movies and he was in Bruckheimer's King Arthur film playing one of the knights. I have always really liked him.

Yeah, Lucius is...!!

I can't remember Volstagg. Is he one of the warriors / friends of Thor?

Yup. The really big guy with the very long hair. He was in both Thor films in this role. The Warriors Three were seriously short changed this time around, they are actually great characters.

I think they had more screen time in the first Thor movie.

I only watched Rome because i shipped Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo (my fav) not a big fan of all that blood, violence, incest and the like. I saw Ray Stevenson in a couple of movies, i wish he had more luck wih his career (see Kevin McKidd) i really like him but alas...

Incest? Between who and who? Aria's children? I have only finished 5 episodes so far, so I don't know. I looked up Kevin McKidd in IMDb, I found out he is still on Grey's Anatomy. I never like that show. Generally, I am not into medical show at all.

Acting world is very competitive and unpredictable. But there are some patterns. For example, British actors playing baddies in big studio movies. I probably will write about it later. Anyway, To me, Ray and Kevin's career seems to be in the right place.

I think I turned off at that point where Octavia after a period of having an affair with Servillia started seducing her brother Octavius.
9 out of 10 historical sources have her pictured as the biggest prude in a skirt.
It could have been caused by Augustus' morality policy to have his sister put up as an exemple of Roman matronism, but still I thought that episode too far deviated from reality to enjoy.

Ahh! You spoiled me. I have not watched this episode. But I see it coming. After watching more recent shows like Starz' Spartacus first, violence and sex in Rome is no longer over the top. And I think they added those gratuitous scenes to draw the viewers. Rome is half fantasy, I am okay with that. It works for HBO too. Correct me if I am wrong, I remember for a while HBO was the only place on American TV that people can see boobs and cocks.

I tought it quite an original approuch to ancient history at the start, but I started gagging when Atia came in full fledge as well at the lesbian relation between Octavia en Servillia.
It became a kind of Peyton Place with sex and violence in old costums with little regard for history.
in general the HBO productions turn out to be a meagre platform for sex, blood and violence so I avoid them whatever the fame and propaganda about them says.

I think ROME is half historical drama half fantasy.
