Went for a drink on Friday with
privatep32 after a long week at work.
Had a haircut on Saturday morning, then went over to visit WW and B ryony.
Saw Watchmen on Sunday.
It was really good - like Fellowship of the Ring, about the best cinema version of the book you could have hoped for. A few changes which mostly made sense. Fewer scenes of the costumed heroes standing around looking stupid, more action scenes in which they look quite cool. Suppose you have to do that with a motion-based medium. Where Moore choreographed fights coldly and clinically, the film emphasises speed and unflinching brutality. So you still get a subversion of superhero action adventure, just done differently. The art direction is brilliant, with special effects used in service of the story (I love how they animated Rorschach's mask). One nice surprise was the choice of music to enhance classic scenes from the comic. There were some fun "Easter eggs", too - particularly in the historic flashbacks.
The slightly changed ending made a certain amount of sense to me - it was internally logical, at least, and I think the details of the plot from the comic might just have seemed odd to an audience who hadn't read it. I thought the very end seemed oddly tacked on and not well introduced within the film - perhaps the New Frontiersman had been referenced earlier but that scene had been cut?
Also took bat and tee to the park and hit softballs a bit.
