Went to a really cool
gig on Monday. Along with
inkognitoh,
silverjet_allie,
minx2012 and Pete. Sea songs and chanteys aplenty, me buckoes, gar! There were a few eccentric performances, but overall it was awesome. Eliza Carthy and her parents were really cool, representing the "proper folk" contingent. As was Julie Fowlis singing in Gaelic. To give an idea of how eclectic it was, the line-up also included Chris Difford, Suzanne Vega, Shane MacGowan, Tim Robbins, Robyn Hitchcock and Martha Wainwright. And a bunch of other people giving it their all in their various ways. I especially liked seeing the random gatherings at the microphones as people acted as backing singers while other performers took their turn to sing the lead.
Interesting hearing slightly different versions of songs I knew - Blood red roses came out softer than the versions I've heard, and the Mermaid much darker (it's usually quite a jolly song about a ship sinking with all hands).
