One mystery solved
When I started the new job, I was surprised to find a part I designed almost 20 years ago at another company sitting in my new office.
It was a part I knew well as I had been very proud of the design and the company I worked for didn’t care about it at all. My boss there did, but not the over all company.
It was when I worked designing office furniture and I came up with a new hook shape to connect shelves to walls.
It was good enough that installers came up to me and shook my hand to thank me for making their lives so much easier, but the higher ups at the company told me they didn’t care about it.
It was weird to find this part sitting in my office 3 companies and decades later. And, I couldn’t figure out how it got there. None of the shelves actually holding things up in the office used this design. Just a pair of brackets sitting on their own in a corner.
After three months working here, I suddenly realized the furniture we were sitting in was one designed by that company when I worked there in the mid-2000’s.
It wasn’t one I had worked on directly, and it had changed a lot in the intervening time, but the way it connects at the bottom was unique and I happened to see one exposed on a wall and realized what it was.
“This is a Divi wall,” I said to the woman sitting in it.
“OK,” she replied. “What about the busbar thermal grease I was asking you about?”
I answered her question and went and looked up the product as it is sold now.
They’ve changed it a lot since 2006. But, that bottom hook is still the same.
I had been in charge of the design of the Matrix product there (
https://www.ais-inc.com/products/matrix ) and still recognize that when I see it.
Mike S had been in charge of the Divi (

I had been to the reviews and helped with the testing, but am not as familiar with it as the one I designed myself.
So, the out of place shelves are much easier to explain when I know that the product used is from the same factory. They aren’t what they’re using now, or at least not on this product, but could have been shipped by mistake or similar and just ended up in the last office of the row, which is where I sit.
That’s certainly better than my old designs following me around…
