Sand sifted between Hermione’s toes, washing in and out with each cresting wave. White foam caught around her ankles like thick chains to tether her to the earth. A lone gull cawed a long, sharp cry high on the wind. It dipped sideways buffeted by the gentle breeze that had swelled with the slow rise of the sun. The dawn grew pink and yellow-orange as the sun crested the tops of the waves and kissed her skin good morning.

Her hand swept the large curve of her extended stomach. She missed being able to see her feet and not being so enormous she couldn’t turn a corner without catching her hip and bruising. She missed hugging her mother and kissing Ron without bending and contorting into positions so uncomfortable for her, she could only imagine it worse for him.

Hermione gazed out across the rolling sea, hugging her shawl closer around her shoulders. Her bags sat packed and ready to leave on the end of the guest bed that had been her own for the past two months. Two months since she’d seen her husband or her friends to be out on an assignment she had wanted a year ago. A year before Rose entered the picture as an unexpected surprise. They hadn’t planned on children as such. Hermione knew Ron wanted to have a family and to a certain degree so did she, but they were busy people. Ron risked his life daily, while Hermione traveled on diplomatic missions that seemed to last an age each time.

But tonight she would be home in her own bed with Ron at her side and Crookshanks curled by their feet. It wasn’t quite what she imagined as a teenager, yet she loved it nevertheless and missed it so much her chest burned with every quick gulp of air she swallowed to bite back tears. The months had been hard without Ron at her side, subtly supporting her in ways she had never thought him capable of before. He’d been steady for her when they went to find her parents the first time and had quietly reassured her that she hadn’t been wrong to take their memories from them. Their safety had been her priority and she had ensured it in such a way that they would survive even if she did not.

Rose kicked her foot up into Hermione’s ribs in a brutal jab. Hermione could nearly trace the tiny foot through her skin while wincing at the performance.

“You’re going to be your father’s daughter, aren’t you?” Hermione said, half a wish and curse. “Stubborn to the end.”

A soft cough from behind her made her jump. She turned to find her mother standing in the sand with a cup of hot tea and an uncertain smile. “Your father has breakfast done when you’re ready to come in.”

Giving the sea a last thoughtful look, Hermione followed her mother up the beach to begin the long hike back to the house.
