Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Faramir is six feet tall, quite strong in the upper body (being an archer), but would be more lithe if not for the fact that he trains so much.
2. How old is he? He was 31 when he left Middle-earth. He is not aging away from it.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch? He sits and stands tall and straight.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? He is very healthy and fit. He is prone to migraine headaches, though they don't happen often. When they do, they're bad. (Italics are things that I've decided and are not of Tolkien.)
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? He is very graceful and fluid of movement.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror? Canon, he's supposed to be quite handsome. He does not see this, finding himself the same as any other man.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? He is fair, with a bit of tanning on the small amount of skin he shows--from being outside. He has a bullet scar in his right shoulder, another on his right calf, and two small knife scars at the back of his neck near the hairline. These are from when he was killed on the island.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style. His hair is strawberry brown, with perhaps a hint of golden at the end of summer. It is soft and thick, worn long, with a tendency to curl.
9. What color are his eyes? A slightly greenish blue. (Not true blue, like Aragorn's eyes.)
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? OMG, nose.
11. What are his chief tension centers? The back of his head and neck and along his spine, but rarely.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit? Most of Faramir's things are natural colours, neutral, brown/green. It's all very similar to be mixed up and worn as needed.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? His clothes fit well, being made for him. He is comfortable in them both physically and metaphorically.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences? He mostly dresses the same at work as otherwise, as he has few other clothes. He does have appropriate formal attire.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? His smallclothes are linen and best described as slightly longer than boxers with a drawstring waist.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? Faramir is a baritone.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate? Unless required to speak louder--and he really can--he prefers to speak evenly in a moderate voice. He speaks without hesitation most of the time.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? His voice sounds upper-class English.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency? He speaks common (English or Westron), Sindarin, Quenya, Rohirric, Adunaic, with a very little Black Speech and Southron.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations? He speaks Quenya to his cat, Olore mi'n Erume. The name is Quenya for Dream in the Desert and the cat is more likely to listen in that language.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words? He is very good at thinking on his feet, which translates to speaking at need.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? He is very eloquent, with a good command of language, although he tries to keep it audience appropriate. He does get somewhat tongue-tied around ladies, especially ladies he has an interest in.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart? He is very intelligent, though probably not a 'genius'. He is both book-smart and street-smart in the ways of his time and place. Modern street smart, not at all.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate? He prefers to have time to think and plan but can think on his feet with no problems.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? He is more logical, though he has strong intuition. He is both idealistic and practical, giving in to the practical for necessity's sake and hoping for the best.
4. What kind of education has the character had? He began to study with tutors at the age of 3 because his mother was ill. He had the best tutors available, and studied until he was 16.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about? His areas of expertise are history (of Middle-earth) and Elven languages. He is also very well-read on battle strategy and historical battles and knows quite a lot about surviving in the wild. He's interested in learning more about almost anything, especially Elves and other cultures.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert? He would have been an introvert had his birth not required him to be otherwise.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Faramir is generally very even-tempered and slow to anger, quick to try to understand and forgive. He does occasionally drift into melancholy and is capable of rage at very rare times. He's his father's son.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? He is generally at ease meeting new people, having been required to do so all his life. He will almost always give a new person the benefit of the doubt, treating them with respect, until such time as they prove themselves unworthy.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react? In most situations, he will act. With women, he has a tendency to react.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight? Fight. Or... mediate.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Faramir's sense of humour is not so gret, akshuly. He does his best and appreciates a good joke or a solid prank, but isn't very successful with any of it. He's not a fan of gallows humour and not at all into bathroom humour.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them? Hard to say. He's had bouts of depression.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person? Being sent to be a ranger and being their captain, his birth, his mother's death. His death on the island.
14. What does he fear? His greatest fear is that Mordor will prevail. (Despite having been told that they do not.) He's afraid of being blind. When he was shot in the shoulder, Marv also tried to push his eyes in. They weren't damaged, but there was concern for a few days. Faramir was terrified.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations? He knows he will marry Eowyn, will be the steward (but not ruling), and Prince of Ithilien. What he actually wants is peace for his land, a wife, and children.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? His greatest shame (betraying Sophie with Glaurnaneth) is known. Well, there's what all his opposite did back on the island, though several people know that--none of them are still in the village.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents. He loved his mother, who died when he was five. He loves and respects his father, who treats him poorly and insults him. This began with the death of his mother. He can do little right in his father's eyes.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? He has a brother, Boromir, five years his senior. He idolizes Boromir, who took care of him after their mother died.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand? He likes his Uncle Imrahil and his family, although they rarely come to Minas Tirith. There are few people he can't stand.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them? He never really considered Beregond as anything more than a close friend. Away from Middle-earth, he has a larger, stranger family. Shasta of Archenland is perhaps a little brother or a son. Richard Riddick (village) was like a brother. Willow Rosenberg was like a sister, and the Minas Tirith program in the holosuite has a room in the citadel they 'decorated' for her. Kerai is like a sister as well. Captain John Hart (previous version) became a cousin one night while they were drinking together.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? Faramir's best friend was Richard Riddick. They first met on an island that was another pocket universe. Richard was taking a bath in a cold pool and Faramir went to get water. They got along after minor fumbling, mostly because Faramir does treat people with respect. Richard respected that. In the village, Richard was calling himself William Johns but Faramir knew who he was and was pleased to see him. This shocked the hell out of Richard. They talked and Faramir pulled his 'you're a better person than you know' and Richard ended up buying it. Faramir was right.
6. Does he have other close friends? Sort of, though they have a way of leaving the village. He's not close to anyone now except maybe Penny and he's trying not to mess that up.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people? He is easily friendly with people, but has a difficult time becoming 'friends'. He's not used to being allowed to do that, being who and what he is.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends? Family.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once? Single
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? Sort of. He's dating Penny and hoping to keep it that way.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest? His first crush was Buffy, from the island. Despite the fact that they were severely different, he fell hard. He is currently making googly-eyes at Penny.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner? He likes strong women who know themselves and what they want. He does want someone he can care for and look after, at least part of the time. He knows that it's not good for someone to always be the strong one--he's seen what it did to his own father.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any? He has a dragon son named Glaurmir, who would currently be (I think) 3 1/2 years old. He adores his son and wants to teach him to be the best man-dragon he can be. He wants more children, with his wife.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies? All of Mordor is his enemy. The Joker hated him. I don't think he has a problem with anyone in the village, although he did minorly insult Deadpool.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale? Faramir is heterosexual. He is more accepting of the idea of homosexuality in others but mildly disturbed as related to himself.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him? Faramir considers sex to be normal and healthy for a man of his age, although he's used to denying himself because of his time as a ranger. He can wait long periods of time without, but very much enjoys when he has it.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits? He has a very sensitive neck. Actually, since he's used to being almost completely covered up most of the time, he just likes to be touched. Due to his opposite... he will never want oral sex. Ever. He's really quite vanilla and doesn't have all that much experience. He wants the lady to have her pleasure too--he was taught that way.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type? They don't have these in Middle-earth.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life? He respects the Valar, and looks West before taking food (at home, anyway), but they aren't really considered gods in his time.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? He does. It probably began as soon as he understood about his family and grew as he grew. He broke it to try and save Boromir's life--it won't happen again.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? He was always fairly tolerant, although not as much as he thought he was. That was a product of his culture. He is now very tolerant of others' beliefs and ways, and often curious. He will be irritated if people are not in turn tolerant of him.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them? He has a distrust of cylons, stemming from those he met on the island. He has since met Leoben in the village and seen that they can grow and change. Part of him really sees them as being like the Uruk-hai because that was how Shelly (Six) made them seem when she explained what cylons were.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? His family is quite wealthy. He does not collect his salary as ranger captain.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him? He is one of the highest-ranking men in Gondor, behind his father, brother, and Uncle (Prince) Imrahil. He was born to this position, although he had two grandfathers alive at that point. He can get no higher rank or title as things stand.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others? He mostly lives in the caves of Henneth Annun, the ranger stronghold. When he is in the city, he has rooms in the citadel. He has never stayed at the house reserved for the Stewards on the sixth level and doesn't stay at his own house. This would have been dowry for a daughter, but became Faramir's. He uses it to help house rangers and their families when they need to stay at the Houses of Healing
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on? Very little. He need a girlfriend so he can buy her gifts.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else? He's the captain of the Ithilien rangers and he's damn good at it. Despite what his father says, he's the best man for the job or he'd be replaced. He knows this. He would rather study and travel, and loves his job at the village library.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time? He enjoys reading and writes poetry. It's not any good, but he enjoys it. A glass of wine and talking with a friend or two would be a fine evening.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? He eats like the soldier he is at home. In the village, he probably does eat out more than he thinks he should but he likes to try new things. He fell in love with fruit juice. He doesn't care for modern beer and finds the instant food items at the store odd-tasting and salty. He'd rather have some good bread, fruit, a bit of meat, cheese. He does drink milk sometimes because he read that it's healthy.
