Golden Globes Red Carpet

Jan 17, 2011 13:38

It was the year of red and green. Hey, at least there was less boring nude and black!

I got the pictures from different sources this time, so they're all different sizes, which I apologize for.

Olivia Wilde in in Marchesa: Well, it's a beautiful dress, but it's a whole lotta dress. Especially for someone whose only there because the star of her show is nominated. Also, her hair looked very flat and flyaway on TV. (Sigh, I do love this dress, but alas I think it takes the right person and occasion to pull it off. She looks good in it, but it's just kind of not right for her and this event.) 7/10

Kaley Cuoco in Katharine Kidd: Here we go again with the blondes in pale dresses. Why must they do this to me? She doesn't look bad, but to me it equals a snoozefest. 6/10

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Romona Keveza: Yikes! Who keeps thinking these very sculptural dresses with tons of fabric are a good idea? Georgina Chapman (of Marchesa) should be taken out and shot for popularizing this look. As to Love here, you should see this dress from the side. And she was looking a bit orange, with hair a bit too staid. 4/10

Elisabeth Moss in Donna Karan: She's sporting a color for once, and it's not a bad dress. My critiques are that she tends to go for looks that are rather mature, and also this dress is a bit wrinkled. But it's a big step up from past performances. 7/10

Dianna Agron in J. Mendel: Oh look a blonde in a nude color. Who teaches these girls to be so afraid of color? This dress manages not to completely wash her out, and her hair and mkeup are very pretty, so I like better than some of the others doing this look. 7/10

Sarah Hyland in Max Azria: She's about 20 but looks young enough to play a 16 year old on TV, as she does. So I can understand why she'd opt for this color to look a bit more her age, and at least she's a brunette. But I'd still like to see her in something more playful. Can't really fault the look, though. 7/10

Piper Perabo in Oscar de la Renta: I like the dress and overall look. However, it looks ill-fitting around the bust, and it's a bit wrinkled. Still, a good outing from someone who shouldn't even have been nominated, but I guess I can't hold that against her and/or her stylist. 7/10

Julie Bowen in Tadashi Shoji: It's a little too ruffly for my usual taste, but I think she looks good. The greige color doesn't completely match her hair and skin. 8/10

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta: I was pleased that she chose something less serious looking than previous outings, but I can't fully approve of tons of ruffles in Pepto Bismol pink. Also, a dress this sculptural MUST be impeccable on the red carpet, but this one is wrinkled and droopy. 4/10

Natalie Portman in VIktor and Rolf: On the one hand, the pregnancy glow is working for her. On the other hand, I don't know if it's her imminent marriage or what that made her decide to come to the Globes as a giant Valentines Day card. (FWIW, the two guys I was watching with thought she looked great, but they admitted to always admiring her looks and they're not fashionistas.) 5/10

Jenna Ushkowitz in Rebecca Taylor: She looks okay, if a bit prommy. I'd love to see that belt with a sleeker dress rather than one that ends in all those tiers. 6/10

Julianne Hough in Marchesa: Hard to see here, but she looked fine. The collar keeps the dress from being too basic. 7/10

Jayma Mays in Alberta Ferretti: Nailed it! She looks hot and is clearly trying to not just be written off as Emma Pillsbury. 9/10

Carrie Underwood in Badgley Mischka: She looks..... zzzzz...... huh? What was I saying? 6/10

January Jones in Versace: I can see some people having a problem with this, but I think it's hot. like Jayma Mays, she's trying not to look like her TV character. She doesn't always manage it, but she hit it out of the park. I never would have guessed she could pull off such va-va-voom! 9/10

Helena Bonham Carter in Vivienne Westwood: I think HBC and Vivienne Westwood must like to get together every so often so smoke crack. It's the only explanation. This is a look only HBC could pull off--mismatched shoes--no less, and I think I can't rate it. This woman, along with La Swinton, needs her own scale.

Nicole Kidman in Prada: Waaaay better than recent hot mess outings. A little boring, but so impeccable that I can forgive that. 8/10

Eva Longoria in Zac Posen: The Project Rungay guys think this is too out of date, but hey, it looks good. I like the use of cap sleeves. 8/10

Catherine Zeta-Jones in Monique Lhuillier: Well, she's glowing and her husband just beat cancer. Wonderful! And though she kind of looks moss-covered, and it's a bit too much dress, I'll give it to her because she's so fab. 8/10

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang: It's a good look for her overall, though it's a bit expected that she will do tight and shiny. The fabric is not forgiving of wrinkles and so on (why am I noticing wrinkles more and more?). I didn't get a picture of the back here, but it was... interesting. 7/10

Emma Stone in Calvin Klein: Great color, but not on her. 5/10

Scarlett Johanssen in Elie Saab: If you do this color dress, the dress should at least be this interesting. Her hair is darker now, anyway. On the other hand, it looks like the Bride of Frankenstein with bedhead (better seen in other angles than this one, unfortunately). 8/10

Mila Kunis in Vera Wang: I wish the picture of the back of this dress I hadn't been too large to post. This dress looks like the fabric has been tortured. What did it ever do to you, Vera? The silhouette is great on her, as is the rest of her look. A shame. 5/10

Julianne Moore in Lanvin: She's made a habit of showing up in shapeless nightmares. This is at least interesting and shapeless. I can't help but think a more fitted, classic look would flatter her infinitely more, though. And was there a shortage of irons and fabric steamers in Hollywood this weekend? 4/10

Claire Danes in Calvin Klein: Now SHE knows that she can rock the simple silhouette. I like how she lets the color basically speak for itself. 9/10

Tina Fey in L'Wren Scott: Hey, it's dark blue rather than black! That's something, and it flatters her great rack. 7/10

Anne Hathaway in Armani: Recipient of the 2011 Cate Blanchett Memorial Award for Red Carpet Fabulousity. THIS is how you kick it old school on the red carpet. Bow the fuck down, bitches! 10/10

Halle Berry in Nina Ricci: She looks like Halle Berry of the mid-90s. No, really--she looks the SAME. While her weird inability to age is admirable, I think it would be fun if she evolved her style more. 7/10

Jane Krakowski in Badley Mischka: Sometimes she doesn't quite pull it off, but this time she looks nice, baby on board and all. Hard to see here, but her eyeshadow matches her dress, which is a faux pas. 7/10

Megan Fox in Armani Prive: The Project Rungays called her "Bondage Barbie" on Twitter last night. I can't be wittier than that, and I agree with them that the weird combo of pink and S&M works for her. 8/10

Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad: Another one who I wish would evolve her style. She manages to look flawless usually, but it's all kinda boring by now. 6/10

Sandra Bullock in Jenny Packham: I dig the flapper vibe of this dress. Whoever chose is did a good job, especially since Sandy can't have been able to see herself in the mirror past those bangs! 6/10

Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander: Again, the normal rules don't apply to her, so I won't rate. La Swinton is in a league of her own.

Leighton Meester in Burberry Prorsum: I go back and forth on this. I like the dress, which is buttoned up but sexy in an interesting way. The lack of color bugs me, but, at the same time, I think a brought color would detract from the silhouette. I guess I'll default to 7/10

Heidi Klum in Marc Jacobs: Great dress, but the hair is too beachy. 7/10

Angelina Jolie (with Brad Pitt) in Versace: She's wearing a color! She's so thin that the silhouette of this dress almost swamps her, but it's a color so I don't care! 8/10

Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka: Kind of a standard look for her, but Helen effing Mirren can do what she likes. 8/10

Michelle Williams in Valentino: Gah. Some people think this is cute, and I can appreciate the Mia Farrowness of it all, I guess, but it's not a look I favor. Her hair is cute, but the dress doesn't also need to so literally channel that era, too. 4/10

Amy Adams in Marchesa: Great color on her, but aside from that, can we call for a moratorium on Marchea? It looks like almost every other Marchesa dress. BORED NOW. 6/10

Christina Hendricks in Romona Keveza: She has a habit of putting big bows and ruffles by her boobs. She has a fabulous figure. She doesn't need a lot of frou frou to distract from it. The shape of the hair along with the bow is too much. I applaud her ability to wear red, though. 6/10

Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen: She looks pretty good. When I think of how far she's come, I can't be too harsh. 7/10

Amber RIley in Oliver Tolentino: She looks hot, but maaaaaybe it's a bit too much sparkle? I hesitate to say a bigger girl shouldn't wear that, though. That would be a lot of sparkle on anyone. Let me say she pulls it off, just. 7/10

Christina Aguilera in Zuhair Murad: When did she become a caricature of herself? And what happened to her face? She looks like she's been stung by 1000 bees. 4/10

Hailee Steinfeld in Prabal Gurung: Cute and appropriate, and actually puts a lot of the older RC vets to shame. 8/10

Katey Sagal in Douglas Hannant: While I appreciate that a 56 year old can wear a dress like this in theory, this particular one is a tad cheap looking. 4/10

Melissa Leo: She looks good. I never got the sense she's a fashionista, so I think she does a good job of looked put together and glamorous, even if she's not fashion forward or anything. 8/10

Kelly Macdonald: She's soooooo pretty, but this dress is soooooooooo boring. 5/10

Hope Davis in Bibhu Mohapatra: Now, this is just sad. 3/10

Edie Falco: Wow, this is my favorite RC look of hers yet! 8/10

Julia Stiles: I never got a good look at this on TV, but the overall ensemble is well done--hair especially. The black is a little safe, but this is a very grownup look for someone we remember from 10 Things I Hate About You. 8/10

Jennifer Lawrence in Louis Vuitton: Doesn't make an impression on me one way or the other. 5/10

Katie Lee: There is a way to do this color (see Sedgwick, Kyra), but this... is not it. The sequins are overkill. 3/10

Kyra Sedgwick (with Kevin Bacon) in Pucci: Hard to say why I think this works so much better than Katie Lee's. I think the orange is a shade deeper, and it doesn't need sequins. The cuff was a great choice. 8/10

Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier: I am partial to the color, but otherwise it's nothing special .7/10

Jane Lynch: Another non-fashionista who pulled it together very well! 8/10

Naya Rivera in Douglas Hannant: She basically looks like she's offering her boobs up on a platter. The dress offers no visual interest to detract from that. 5/10

Julianna Margulies in vintage Yves Saint Laurent: It looks vintage, alright. As a result, it's very ladylike, but I'd prefer her to do more fashion-forward stuff. 6/10

Milla Jovovich in Armani Prive: I think she's very glam in this, but a little mature and staid. 7/10

Vanessa Williams in Roberto Cavalli: She can do fab or a bit crazy, but this? Is a bit boring. You disappoint me, Vanessa. Go back home to Wisteria Lane and think about what you've done. 6/10
