Emmys Red Carpet

There were some interesting dresses, but the colors were BORING. That is all.

Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) in Pamella Roland: This girl looks (and plays) 15 but is really 19, but she's still soooo diminutive that the cleavage is a bit disturbing. It's not bad for her first time out, though. 7

Kelly Osbourne (THAT Kelly Osbourne) Tony Ward: She looks really, really, good. And yes, it's THAT Kelly Osbourne. 8

Kim Kardashian (of sex tape and reality fame) in Marchesa: I hate to say this, but she's one of the few people that this color really suits, and she looks immaculate. 9

Lauren Graham (Parenthood) in Yigal Azrou: I love you Lorelai Gilmore, but oh helll no. Too drapey and weird and does nothing for her, which is sad because she's so beautiful. 4

Lea Michele (Glee) in Oscar de la Renta: She looks great: great dress (the first of the dresses we'll see that looks black in these pics but was navy), well styled, etc etc but it's all kind of expected, to me. And since this has been her first red carpet season, I'm sorry to say that. But it's a big dress and she carries it off well for a petite girl. 8

Claire Danes (Tample Grandin) in Armani Prive: I usually hate when blondes match their hair, so to speak, but there is no denying that this is stunning. It's hard to tell here, but this dress really glowed on her, and she looked like the winner she turned out to be. The dress was a big statement and I like how everything else was simple. Best Dressed. 10

Eva Longoria Parker (Desperate Housewives) in Robert Rodriguez: Wow, a big snooze from her. She wasn't nominated, so I guess that's okay. This is within her wheelhouse, but in a more boring way and... yeah, she looks staid. 6 (PS this one is actually black)

Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) in Carolina Herrera: This one is not staid, and she's hot and it fits her like a glove. I don't think the line running down the dress is a good idea, though it's not completely fugly. The combo of gold with silver beading is interesting, anyway. 7

Naya Rivera (Glee): Someone raided a flamenco dancer's wardrobe. Maybe she's auditioning for Dancing with the Stars? The color is great on her, but that's about it. Too much. 4

Tina Fey (30 Rock, Not!Sarah Palin) in Oscar de la Renta: Okay, this is not a surprise in terms of color, but a huge step up in terms of style. The dress is graphic and memorable, and the jewelry (hard to see here, but the bracelet with tassels is fab) is to die for. 9

Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) in Zac Posen: I know she was on an episode of Firefly, but I am not sure "Old West Barmaid" is a look she should revisit. Especially in lavender, which is really not doing anything for her extraordinary complexion. But the dress fits her well, which has been a problem in the past. 5

Anna Paquin (Sook-eh) in Alexander McQueen: Surprisingly, I like the top of this dress, though it's not my usual thing.Very Cleopatra. But the dress is doing something very weird around her waist. 6

Heidi Klum in Marchesa: Project Rungay said it best: mutton dressed as lamb. She can pull it off better than most, but it's getting tiring. And her face is a weird color--has she been tanning with Michael Kors? She should know better. 5

Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) in Monique Lhuillier: I'm glad she's not wearing beige/navy/black/white, but it's a little goth with her coloring in some shorts (especially with the dark lipstick) and the hair is distracting. 5

Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) in Max Azria: It's a little bland for a nominee (though it looked better on TV), but she had a baby less than a month ago, and it's in a color. Sometimes simple is best. 7

Jayma Mays (Glee) in Burberry: I wish I had a better picture. It's navy again, and with her coloring, it's very striking. I dig it. 8

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) in Narciso Rodriguez: I am pretty sure she wore this same dress in recent years but in coral. I know people liked this, and she does look great, but a black dress that looks like past dresses? Meh. 6

Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) in L/Wren Scott: She claimed this was navy, but in this case, I don't buy it. This is a more youthful look for her, and I like it. You can't tell here, but I think her eye makeup wasn't doing anything for her, but otherwise, I like it. Especially because unlike some other people, her hair, though down, is not all straggly. 7

Jane Krakowski (30 ROck) in Escada: Again with the blue, and it works on her. However, I'd have removed either the waist ruffle or the shoulder ruffle. Both are way too much together. 6

Dianna Agron (Glee) in Carolina Herrera: This is a bit fussy. It's not bad, I guess, but I'd prefer to see her in something more fun and sexy. The skirt doesn't need two tires of ruffle and the long ribbon is distracting. 5

Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries) in Zuhair Murad: She and Jewel had similar Murad dresses, but I think this one works a lot better. I don't mind the color on her, and she's working it to within an inch of its life. 8

Amber Riley (Glee): I think she looks great. It's very similar to Kardashian but the dresses work on each of them for different reasons. 8

January Jones (Mad Men) in Versace: My first reaction was "huh?" And then my final reaction was "HUH?" I applaud her for taking risks when so few other high profile stars are, but the length is actually awkward on her (which should be impossible with someone who looks like her) and the dress looks like Donatella sewed leftover Christmas present bows together. And yet I don't completely hate it... I just say, huh? Oh, and comb your hair, and be nicer to Sally. 6

Elisabeth Moss ("My name is Peggy Olson, and I'd like to smoke some marijuana") in Donna Karan: Well, she looks way better than she has in the past, though I dearly wish she'd introduce herself to some color. A huge step in the right direction, anyway. 8

Jane Lynch (Glee) in Ali Rahimi: This is what Go Fug Yourself calls the scrolldown fug. In this case, the top is great, then the middle is crumpled strangely (sorry, hard to tell here), and the bottom is okay. But she looks radiant, and most people were making vaguely homophobic remarks about how she'd probably show up in a pantsuit, so I won't complain too much. 6

Rutina Wesley (True Blood) in Douglas Hannant: A print! I like it! The dress is a great shape on her and shows off her incredible arms. The hair is nice, but the blush was applied by a kindergartener. So close Rutina. 8

Nancy Juvonen with Jimmy Fallon: Pregnancy is the only excuse for this shapeless horror resurrected from the 70s, but as far as I know, she's not expected. Ah hell, it would be bad even then, too. 2

Glenn Close (Damages) in Ruben Singer: She called this color "metallic olive" on the red carpet. That should have been the first sign to stay away, but really, I guess it's not bad. It's very her, anyway. 5

Jewel in Zuhair Murad: This is just too sweet and fussy by half. Almost bride-like, even. And Claire Danes aside, I wish blondes would stop waring these pale colors. This one doesn't match her hair, at least. Maybe I am just not a huge fan of lace. 4

Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee) in Nicole Miller: Not the most earth-shattering red carpet gown ever, but hey, it's a color! I think it's suitable for a non-nominee on a nominated show. 7

a
Toni Colette (United States of Tara) in Valentino: I was really sorry to hear that Toni had to cross a mud pit to get to the ceremony. No, wait... what's that you say? Oh, it's just the dress. 3

Maria Menounos in Ralph and Russo: I put this in because it's a unique shape for the red carpet. I don't mind that she went there. 7

Keri Russel in Jean-Louis Scherrer: Got lost on the way to being a bridesmaid in a beach wedding. 3

I

Emily Blunt in Christian Dior with John Krasinski: Not earth shattering, Gorgeous! She was just the arm candy for her hubby here, so she doesn't need to be the center of attention. Unlike Hendricks, lavender works on her. 8

Emily Deschanel (Bones) in Max Azria: Dress 6 (bit busy, but it's a color), bangs, 3.

Heather Morris (Glee) in Ina Soltani: I like this as far as I can see and wish I had a pic of the bottom. Gold sequins could be tacky but she has an old Hollywood vibe here and it works. 8

Kathy Griffin (Ms. D List) in Oscar de la Renta: On TV, you can tell she's had too much work done and lost too much weight--she's starting to become dessicated, like a mummy. The dress is not bad for her, though. 5

Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter): This is HOT. And she looks a little less painfully thin than she has in the past. Marriage to Michael C. Hall (yum) must agree with her. 9

Wanda Sykes and wife Alex Sykes: I am not rating (though they look good) because it's just awesome to see a wife-wife team both decked out for the red carpet. Respect.

Padma Lakshmi (Top Chef, the former Lady Rushdie): It's not bad, but I am dying to rip that extra tulle off her. And she falls prey so stringy hair syndrome. 6

Rita Wilson in Prada with Tom Hanks: Surely she has a waist somewhere under there, right? 4

Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie): Her hair is fun, but the dress (actually black)is just okay. Nothing you wouldn't expect to see from a woman her age, which is sad because she has a decent body and could do more. I think it's just not her thing, though. 6

Brooke Burke: She looks hot and only borderline trashy. WIsh the dress weren't white, but at least she's not pale. 6

Ty Burrell with wife Holly: Wives of nominees shouldn't put their dresses together with glue guns and spare fabric. His grey tux kind of fits her personality. For her, 2

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt in Armani: Her dress is nice (green, but hard to tell here), but doing no favors for her chest. 6 However, she gets a 10 for best armcandy.

Berry White: She's effing Betty White. Bow down!

Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife): I think the dress (actually black) is more interesting than any picure I could find shows. I love the upswept hair. 8

Julie Benz: And here's where the blonde in a light dress thing gets old for me. She doesn't look bad, just boring. And the bracelet is weirdly placed. 5

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka: And a husband-husband team now! So cute, and I love NPH's outside the box tux. Not everyone could pull that off, though.

Aaron Paul: Just because he won and is rocking the classic tux look.

Michael C. Hall (Dexter): What's with the hair?
