Fanfic for Tuesday

Jun 16, 2009 01:10

Here are dozen stories, though it was a difficult choice. I limited myself to one story per author, so definitely check out other works by these writers.

Don't let unfamiliar fandoms stop you - except for the SG-1 rec, I think all these could be read and enjoyed by someone new to the fandoms.

Since this is the first posting for The Sentinel, a brief summary: Jim is a fairly reserved, ex-military police detective. He has heightened senses - can see and hear things much better than everyone else - which can also cause him problems. Blair is a "neo-hippie" grad student who has studied the senses and can help.

I've also included two crossovers in the list: Rurouni Kenshin x Star Wars and Foxtrot x Calvin & Hobbes.

Fandom: Rurouni Kenshin and Star Wars
Title: Shadows in Starlight
Author: Vathara
Link:http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4031223/1/Shadows_in_Starlight
Rating: T
Status: Complete
Summary: What if Obi-Wan found more than the tractor beam's location in the Death Star files? AU, fusion with Rurouni Kenshin.
Why I fangirl this: Vathara can write crossovers like nobody else. She stays true to the characters while still making it easy for those who don't know the fandoms to grasp the story. I found this one to be an interesting take on Kenshin's moral issues.

Fandom: Rurouni Kenshin
Title: Zaibatsu Project
Author: whiteadelphi
Link: http://community.livejournal.com/zaibatsuproject/
Rating: PG for violence (so far)
Status: In Progress
Summary: This is a cyberpunk AU of Rurouni Kenshin
Why I fangirl this: It's stylistically intriguing, well written, and has a plot that grabs you.
Fandom: Foxtrot x Calvin & Hobbes
Title: Geniuses
Author: Amaretto
Link: http://www.jc.amasour.com/jcgeniuses.html
Series: http://www.jc.amasour.com/jcfiction.html
Rating: PG
Status: Complete
Summary: Ever wondered what would happen if Jason from Foxtrot met Calvin in college…
Why I fangirl this: I never, ever gave a second thought to either of these fandoms, much less this pairing until I found this. And then I wondered why I hadn't thought of it before. Funny, in character, and a delight to read. If you like the first one (Geniuses), be sure to read Gum Code.

Fandom: Inuyasha
Title: Phoenix Blade: Time Lapse
Author: Fenikkusuken
Link: http://mediaminer.org/fanfic/view_st.php/99650
Rating: X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence.
Status: Complete
Summary: An AR riff on the anime. Kagome Higurashi, recent graduate of the Imperial Military Academy, finds all of her skills being put to the test in the Sengoku Jidai after she's sucked down the well at her family's shrine.
Why I fangirl this: I love the intricate way time travel (a Inuyasha standard) is handle here. Kagome has to interact with the same people in both the past and the present - making sure she doesn't alter the future, but needing the knowledge from the future to save the past.

Fandom: SG-1
Title: Aftershocks
Author: Rachel500
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2914398/1/Aftershocks_I
Rating: T
Status: Complete
Summary: A series of TAGs for Seasons One and Two. What really happened with SG1 after and in between their missions? How did Daniel and Teal'c become friends? And how did Jack and Sam begin to fall for each other?
Why I fangirl this: These are great episode tags - conveying a wide array of emotions. I love the character development and insights they provide. Also check out Aftershocks II and II for seasons 3 through 6.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Title: Control Issues
Author: Lit Gal
Link: http://litgal.brinkster.net/Control/CI1.htm
Rating: Rated ADULT for angst, rape, explicit sex
Status: Complete
Summary: In a world that knows, loves, respects, but doesn't trust its Sentinels, Jim is determined to hide his abilities. He won't submit to a guardian ad litem having custody of him in a legal system that ranks him on the same level as a child. He will not give up his control, not to anyone.
Why I fangirl this: I really enjoy how well Lit Gal crafts not just a plot but a complete world. This story is one I've reread multiple times. While angst filled, it's great to see the developing relationship between Jim and Blair.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Title: A Kiss at a Time
Author: Legion
Link: http://www.squidge.org/~theforest/larchive/akiss.htm
Series: Navigation Series http://www.squidge.org/~theforest/larchive/archive.html
Rating: G (for this story, but the series works up to NC-17)
Status: Complete
Summary: An unexpected pregnancy has unexpected effects on J/B's relationship.
Why I fangirl this: I really like stories that explore Jim and Blair slowly becoming a couple as a natural outgrowth of their situation. When a fantastic author like Legion gives it a go, it's a must read story.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Title: Fucking with Sandburg
Author: arrow00
Link: http://arrow00.livejournal.com/18254.html
Rating: NC-17
Status: Complete
Summary: Jim gets more than he bargained for. Is that a bad thing?
Why I fangirl this: Arrow's work is good. This is a relatively short, but funny and sexy story that brought a smile to my face.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Title: Detecting Sandburg
Author: wordwitch
Link:http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/19/detectingsandburg.html
Serieshttp://www.852prospect.org/archive/cgi-bin/search.cgi?ShortResults=0&Title=&Author=wordwitch&Summary=&Date=0&SortBy=0&SortOrder=0&NumToList=0&FastSearch=0
Rating: G, Pre-slash
Status: Complete
Summary: "Jim knows more about Sandburg than Sandburg thinks he knows."
Why I fangirl this: I love how this story gets inside Jim's mind. I also think it's an interesting take on their transition from straight to a romantic couple.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Title: Moonhunt
Author: Dolimir
Link:http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/14/moonhunt.html
Rating: NC-17
Status: Complete
Summary: "A young shaman is caught out in the open during a moonhunt and his life is forever changed."
Why I fangirl this: I love Dolimir's work. I'm not sure what keeps drawing me to this story, but I keep rereading it even though I think some of the other works are better written. It's short enough, so give it a try.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Title: I Still Believe
Author: Dasha
Link:http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/5/istill.html
Series: All stories in the series.
Rating: R
Status: Complete. First in Series.
Summary: After years as partners on the police force, Jim has been having serious health problems. Blair has them leave Cascade to become a county sheriff in an attempt to save him.
Why I fangirl this: This is a poignant series of how things could go wrong, how they might cope, and their love and faith in each other. I enjoy a lot of Dasha's work, but this is one of my favorites.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Title: Tempus Fugit
Author: Lemon Drop
Link: http://slashcity.org/quercus/Sentinel/Tempus.html
Rating: Not given, I'd say PG-13 or so
Status: Complete
Summary: A look a Blair's life through the holidays and festivals he celebrates.
Why I fangirl this: I love the character insight this piece provides. It also brings an interesting perspective to the meaning of holidays.
