Beside You In Time
(Say hello to the tangerine sky.)

The stars will be crying their bluest tears tonight.

It is getting dark, but he can still see her glowing so radiantly, just like she always does. He calls her name quietly and curiously as he sees her sitting on the beach in front of two long pieces of wood tied together to form a cross. She doesn't respond, doesn't look his way, and instead stares at a small object in her hands and moves it as if it's going to break with even the slightest touch, as if it's the most delicate thing in the world. While lighting a cigarette, he walks closer to her and stands behind her and says nothing to grant her wish, a wish for the quiet.

After a few moments, she says, "This is her grave. This is my mother's grave." She continues to gaze at the object in her hand. Extending his hand to squeeze her uninjured shoulder for a silent apology, he swiftly realizes that it's a tangerine--a fruit with such a bittersweet taste, such a delightful smell.

"What's her name?" he asks slowly, unsure if he should have used the past or the present tense. He doesn't want to make her upset in any way, because she has suffered enough, and he swears that she does not deserve anymore.

"Her name?" She smiles. "Belle-Mère."

He decides the latter was all right to question her in, and he's glad she answered, because the words sound so familiar to him and he is sure that he can continue to widen that smile of hers. "Do you know what her name means in French?"

"No."

"It means beautiful mother," he says, grinning.

"Beautiful... mother. She was beautiful," she claims. "She took care of me and my sister even when it seemed hopeless. She always put us before herself, and never tried to make us worry. She taught us everything we know, and she cherished her tangerine groves, too, and everyone else in this village, and... everything about her was beautiful."

He says nothing and she starts to tell stories of when she and her sister were younger, stories of when her mother was still alive. As he sits down beside her in the sand, he lets her know that he's there to listen, that she doesn't have to worry about him leaving her with nothing but the sunset and her memories and reminders of what could have been and what should be. The sand reminds him of an hourglass, somehow--but he knows that they're not running out of time at all. He has all the time in the world to listen and bring joy to the one he loves the most. She has all the time in the world to tell and let out the pain and the suffering she had endured for so long.

The stars will be crying their bluest tears tonight.

(Say hello to tomorrow.)
