2013 in Fandom: "I Threw My Pie for You."
End of year fandom meme time. This one was gakked from bessiemaemucho.
1. Your main fandom of the year?
Breaking Bad obviously. Nothing else comes close. 2013 will always be the year of the Breaking Bad final eight and nobody who experienced that devastating run of episodes will ever recover.
2. Your favourite film watched this year?
I've not seen any movie this year that I've loved half as much as Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the Southern Wild last year. I liked Mud, I liked Gravity but then everyone did. Catching Fire didn't disappoint. A lot of the films I really wanted to see like Kill Your Darlings and Nebraska didn't get a wide release in the UK so I'm waiting for them on DVD. Others I really want to see like Her and Inside Llewyn Davis aren't released here till next year. Only Lovers Left Alive looks great too.
3. Your favourite book read this year?
I really liked I Have Waited And You Have Come, the dystopian stalker story set in my home county of Cheshire. I read American Gods for the first time this year and that pretty much ate my brain for a month or so. I can still remember drinking my tears while reading The Fault in our Stars. I have to confess my reading habits have been poor in 2013. I still haven't finished Wool.
4. Your favourite album or song listened to this year?
I got the live album recording of An Evening with Neil Gaimen and Amanda Palmer for Christmas and it's really delightful. The song I'll most closely associate with this year will probably be Runaway by The National, the song I used for my Walt and Jesse tribute.
5. Your favourite TV show of the year?
Breaking Bad. Likely to be the favourite TV show of my life. Let's just see if anything can ever top this.
6. Your favourite online fandom community?
I've made lots of new friends in Breaking Bad fandom this year and the year before, but with all the Skyler haters and Walt stans on the internet I can't say the online community is wonderful as a whole. So I'll say Hannibal fandom has been my favourite of the year which is a pleasingly cracky and creative fandom for a show about a sociopathic serial killer who eats people.
7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
My best new discovery came right at the start of the year when I started marathoning Six Feet Under on DVD. Why did I wait so long? I'm still in love with all them Fishers and Chenowiths. My favourite actual new show was Orange is the New Black which inspired me to get a Netflix account which I'm sure will help towards future fandom discoveries. Lastly I have give a shoutout to my favourite Brit discovery of the year, Black Mirror. Only six episodes but they are still haunting me.
8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
I know Dexter has been disappointing people for a while now, but I only got into the show this year and so I wasn't fully prepared for the epic fail that was the last few episodes of the final season. After Hannah (one of the worst characters/ships I've ever experienced) returned, I couldn't bare to watch anymore, especially since they were playing at the same time as the epic brilliance of BrBa's final run. I also felt very lukewarm about Mad Men and even Game of Thrones this year.
9. Your TV boyfriend of the year?
My boys Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul brought me a lot of joy this year, even as their characters were driving me crazy and breaking my heart (respectively). Though my other main man in the early part of 2013 was Michael C Hall whose great talent and quirky sex appeal I discovered through my marathons of his two long-running tv shows.
10. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Who else but Tatiana Maslany? Who didn't fall in love with her and all her clone creations this year? But I'll also say the entire cast of Orange is the New Black especially the incredible Uzo Aduba. I will be your wife Crazy Eyes! And in the early part of the year I was crushing on Emmy Rossum again who gave her best performance yet as Fiona Gallagher.
11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I miss livejournal fandom in general. It's all gone so quiet this year. So many communities have gone dead and there are so many friends I miss who no longer post here. And even though I've got a Tumblr, I still really hate Tumblr. For graphic sharing, yeah it's fine. But as a place for fandom? Hate it. I can't make friends on Tumblr. I can't have discussions on Tumblr. I can't create anything of substance that anyone will care to respond to on Tumblr. So yeah...I miss livejournal based fandom because it feels like there aren't many of us left here :(
12. The fandom you haven't tried yet but want to?
I'm definitely going to give Justified I try in the new year. It's kind of disappointing that I haven't caught up in time for S5 which I believe is starting very soon. Other that, I'm really not sure what to watch next, but I'm open to recs.
13. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Breaking Bad is more of a Waaaah! thing than a Squeee! thing. So I'll say my biggest squee of the year was seeing Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds live, one of the greatest gigs of my life. Also it's not really a fandom thing, but getting to play the role of Amy in Breathing Corpses was one of the big highlights of this year for me.
14. The biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Well coming up first on New Years Day there's Sherlock. I'm really looking forward to S3 since I rewatched S1 and S2 over the Christmas holidays. Also in January I'm excited to see Joseph Gordon Levitt's Hitrecord tv show. I was a member of Hitrecord site a few versions back around the time the community were creating the Morgan M Morganson shorts (linked below). I still love the concept of it. Then there's S2 Hannibal coming up in February which I'm really excited about since S1 set up such a great premise with Will Graham trapped in a lunatic asylum, falsely accused for all Lecter's crimes. Plus there's new Shameless, Orange and Orphan coming early in 2014. Hopefully all this can distract me from missing Breaking Bad like crazy.
