So Alex and I just spent four days in LA. Neither of us can figure out why anyone wants to live there. It's mile upon mile of dirty little shops and run-down apartments. There's hardly any mountains and the smog makes it look like LA is in a perpetual fog bank.
We flew in on Thursday morning, after which both of us collapsed for several hours. We're dorks who flew into a new city and then spent all evening hanging out in the hotel room, watching tv. After prodigious wrangling with the inefficient public transport system, we visited Santa Monica Pier on Friday. It's supposedly famous. Can't imagine why, it's a tiny little amusement park on a pier, complete with plenty of overpriced greasy food. After having lunch with Ulric & Erik, which was rather nice, we headed back to get ready to attend Ben & Melly's wedding.
The wedding was supremely lovely. This was my first ever wedding, but I can't imagine anything more tastefully done. The wedding was officiated by Melly's grandfather. He seems like quite a character. He amused me by barking at Ben to take his hands out of his pockets and then interrupting the wedding kiss. The wedding location was a small, but beautiful outdoor garden venue, which unfortunately lay directly under the incoming flight path into LAX. This added a somewhat surreal and entertaining aspect to the proceedings, as the wedding speeches had to be interrupted every five minutes so a plane could pass by overhead. I've never seen Ben & Melly so happy, so I'm so glad I could attend and join in the celebration. Ben & Melly, hopefully you've survived the inudation of relatives and are on your honeymoon now. I wish you happiness. =)
Saturday was plesantly spent wandering around the Huntington Botanical gardens with Jamaica and her boyfriend Timothy, and then later with Ben, Melly and assorted other wedding guests. The Huntington Library has a copy of the Gutenberg bible among other things. Alex was so taken with a painting the art gallery had on loan, she bought a poster print of it. Now our condo will have actual art hanging up in it. Cool!
Sunday was predominently spent in navigating LAX and returning home. That was our trip in LA. Same gang, different city.
