stethoscopes

There are two reasons why stethoscopes are important:
1) to be one
2) to receive one
As for the first, there are two sub-reasons:
a) for yourself
b) for others

This past weekend I was hit by a wave of creative yearning with no outlet. I consoled myself by reading articles written from the creativity of others and letting myself think about what I would create if I had the materials ready. This is my reminder that it is time to check up on my heart. So I took a long walk and the time to listen. My heart didn't say anything profound or cry out in desperation; it was just joyously grateful that I was listening to it.

Being "away" helps my stethoscope work better sometimes. Sometimes it needs the otherness of not being at home. At the beach this weekend and at the Eisley concert tonight I caught myself being completely free from any worries or responsibilities. Even when I caught myself I could tell I was really free because I didn't start thinking about them immediately, I went back to enjoying what I was doing. In that moment, let my heart be.

We are rough with ourselves. Sometimes it takes the gentleness of others to learn when we need to be gentle with ourselves too. I like the way that doctors and hair stylists and make-up artists touch you gently and cautiously because they're not so used to the way your body responds to things like you are. The softness of loving friendship is like this too. When the mutual depth of love is shared in the small acts, then the co-beating of your hearts is all the more penetrating.

Life is short but sweet for certain. * Dave Matthews Band
