I love animals, and always get really depressed when I go to Japanese pet shops. It's always really terrible to see how often they are kept in tiny cages where they can hardly move, and rarely even have a toy or two to keep them occupied. I only hope they all get adopted soon, but I still would rather not support chains that don't actually seem to

Hmm, I was told by my real estate agent that usually small pets are not a problem. One of the big issues with keeping a cat or a dog is just the noise, and small pets don't make noise. He said of course ask the landlord first, but he seemed to be under the impression that ferrets would generally be less problematic than a cat or a dog. It would be nice if I didn't have to pay a deposit - pet deposits are really kind of absurdly awful for the price they're demanded. I know a lot of Japanese people are just dishonest about it. In my current apartment, which is no pets, someone quite openly keeps a cat and lets it wander on the balcony and windowsill.
Thanks for the recommendation on Pet Forest! But can you tell me that it's better than the average pet shop? Do they keep the animals in better sized cages, and not euthanize and stuff? From the website, it seems really cute, though. They have a couple ferrets that are really cute!
..I don't get why all these Japanese stores sell ferrets for different prices based off the color. :-/ Luckily to me, color doesn't matter so I'll just take the cheapest one, but it's very strange! In the US, they're all the same price. XD; (and they're significantly cheaper... but let's not start comparing with the most expensive city in the world. lol)
Ooh, I've seen that big cat cafe in Ikebukuro! I haven't been there, but I've almost gone several times! No point now, though, I have a cat cafe right outside my apartment. Except it's me feeding them. lol
