I love animals, and always get really depressed when I go to Japanese pet shops. It's always really terrible to see how often they are kept in tiny cages where they can hardly move, and rarely even have a toy or two to keep them occupied. I only hope they all get adopted soon, but I still would rather not support chains that don't actually seem to value their animals.
Can anyone recommend a GOOD pet shop, that treats the animals well? Back home where I'm from, there was a little local pet shop that only "sold" cats and dogs rescued from the pound. The fee was only to cover basic costs of shots and boarding to keep the program going financially. (they were all kept in well sized compartments and volunteers came in daily to play with them.) They also sold really good quality food, not any of the sawdust kibble that is lots of huge brands. That's the kind of place I would really love to find here in Tokyo.
I'm looking into getting a ferret, actually. Or a cat, but I wouldn't buy one - I'd just adopt one of the many strays near my apartment, but I'm soon moving into a new apartment and though it's pet-friendly, there's a huge deposit if you keep a cat or dog and I'm hoping that won't apply to small animals. I want to get a ferret from a pet store that I can feel good about shopping at, without feeling like I'm supporting a place that treats animals poorly. I'd also be happy to adopt a ferret if there any rescues for them.
I live in Tokyo. Thanks for any help.
