How about cheese? I believe Canadian cheeses are available at Sainsburys.

No ideas, but have you tried the food communities?

(food_porn is the only one I'm personally on... but there are many, many more, I'm sure)

I'm always suprised to see lentils are always grown in Canada.

Granted these might not be quite identifiable enough but when I was a kid we ate:

Peanut butter & Jam sandwiches

Ants on a log - celery filled with peanut butter and line raisins up in a row down the peanut butter

Rice crispie squares- they are easy to make and apparently different than the UK recipe. http://www.kelloggs.com/brand/rk/recipe_classics.shtml

*Grin* even Macarroni and Chesse. It's a fairly dependable staple.

Sorry if it's not much help.

First thing that came into my mind was Nanaimo Bars (omg, I need to eat those NOW!!), but back to thinking about Canadian food. This has always been particulary hard for me to distinguish, as whenever I'm in Canada, I'm never sure if what I'm eating is Canadian or American, or even both. Although something that's always been 'Canadian' to me are Peanutbutter Cookies (with the fork imprints as well) because of the memories that come with them-my mother always used to make them, and she got the recipe from her mother, who got it from her mother, who coulnd't have gotten it from her mother, because she didn't know who she was, and frankly, you can see where I'm going here-my Canadian family is pretty much like a soap opera.

But yes, Peanutbutter cookies are my Canadian food choice. Oh, that and Fresca, but I doubt you'd be able to get that in England.

how about pickle-flavored crisps? or ketchup flavor for that matter? i always thought the national dish of canada was poutine - chips with gravy and melted cheese on top.

That's a Quebecois dish.

Poutine is available all over Canada. So its not just a Quebec thing. Its quite popular in Toronto I hear. I've had it both in Calgary and Nanaimo. KFC even sells it! You won't find it in the states thats for sure. So its purely Canadian.

Also its tradionally cheese curd with gravy on chips(french fries for the Canadians/Americans). Its very tasey.

I know what it is, I make it. I'm just pointing out that it is a dish which came from Quebec.

Also, tourtiere would be a good one to serve.
