It seems that the trick-or-treating in Tallahassee has moved in an odd direction lately and I'm wondering if this is comon elsewhere. Apparently, a lot of parents drive across town so their kids can trick-or-treat in certain "nice" neighborhoods. One of my bosses lives in a newly built neighborhood that is packed full of very nice houses. She gave out almost 10 giant bags worth of candy last night. She sat on her porch all evening and handed candy to the steady stream of little pirates and princesses. Someone down the hall told me that in his neighborhood he has actually seen church buses dropping off loads of kids in costumes to trick-or-treat. It's apparently quite mad to try driving through certain posh areas of town on Halloween, unless you want to run over children. The shoulders and medians of the road leading UP to one of these neighborhoods were last night overrun with cars parked there undoubtedly by parents (who at least had the brains to go with their kids trick-or-treating and not just turn them loose for a few hours).
While I suppose it makes sense not to send/take your kids out into some dangerous neighborhood full of crackhouses to ask for candy, it still seems weird to take it to such an extreme. In any case, there are no known crackhouses in MY neighborhood and the homes are fairly close together, so it would not be that taxing to walk from one to the next.
On the other hand, if I were a kid, I'd want as much candy as possible, so I'd be all for it. If the kids want to go there, and the homeowners don't mind buying a LOT of candy, I suppose there's no harm in it.
