Music Post: Doves

Jul 09, 2007 18:47

About two weeks ago, while at work I was shocked to hear a song I actually love coming through on the Muzak. It was "The Everlasting" by Manic Street Preachers. Everyone laughed at me when I exclaimed out loud, "Hey, this song rocks!"

The other day it happened again. The Muzak played "Caught by the River" by Doves. I sat bolt upright and cried, "Hey, this is the CD in my car right now!"

And of course, everyone laughed.

I love this band. I first heard them six years ago, when I moved to Florida. I was living with my mom then, and she had Dish Network. Among the 800,000,000 channels were some devoted strictly to playing music. They were neatly categorized, and I had the channel number of about four of them memorized, since they played the kind of music I liked.

I heard a lot of new music on those satellite channels. And one of the bands I first heard there were Doves. Two songs, in fact, that I fell madly in love with. I made it my mission to find their CD and buy it.

As luck would have it, around that time I was going to visit ladyofastolat. Doves being an English band, the CD was in plentiful supply. I bought it at an HMV for 6.99. (The jewel case still has the sticker on it.) I didn't get to listen to the CD until I came back home, but once I did, I was deeply in love.

A couple years ago, the band released another CD, which I immediately bought, and also fell in love with. And since I love this band so much, I thought it was high time I shared.

So here are two CDs of music, individual songs plus zip files, along with a few comments from me.

Happy listening!

The Last Broadcast

1. Intro
2. Words
*3. There Goes the Fear
4. M62 Song

7. Satellites
8. Friday's Dust
**9. Pounding
10. Last Broadcast
11. The Sulphur Man
***12. Caught by the River

* There Goes the Fear. I adore this song. I'm not so fond of the very end, but the percussion kills me. It's absolutely impossible for me to listen to this song in the car and not drum along on the steering wheel.

** Pounding. Hands-down, my favorite. A driving beat, a great chorus, and the music from 3:50 to 4:13 (really, to the end of the song) are among the most perfect musical moments ever. I could listen to that part over and over a thousand times and never grow tired of it.

*** Caught by the River. Another favorite. The two solos are amazing. I love the way this song ebbs and swells and falls back again.

* Black and White Town. My absolute favorite on this album. The very first time I played this CD, in the car on the way home from the shop, I had to stop and listen to it three or four times before I went on to the rest of the disc.

** Snowden. This song is absolutely beautiful. That's all I have to say about it.

*** Walk in Fire. Although the lyrics and the story they tell break my heart, the song itself is very uplifting. I particularly love the chorus at the end and the way the music swells.
