Polls

Tonight I got a call from one of those research places who ask for a few minutes of your time to participate in a survey. Since I didn't have anything going on at the moment, I said, Sure.

I knew I had hit the jackpot when the first question right out of the gate was, "Do you intend to vote in November 2008?"

The survey was about a potential referendum on the Florida ballot in November 2008 to ban same-sex marriages, and possibly also same-sex civil unions.

Needless to say, I'm sure everyone here can figure out what my responses were.

After the questions, I asked the lady where she was calling from, and who had sponsored the survey. I said I wasn't challenging her, but I was genuinely curious. I wanted to know, for instance, if Governor Crist had authorized the research. She said that no one in particular sponsored them, but that their results were often picked up by the media and reported, and that was how they got paid.

Then she said, "Thank you for your partic-- Oh, sorry. There I go, being political."

I just burst out laughing. I said, "That's the problem with living in a red state."

She chuckled and said, "Well, I'm calling from New York. Make of that what you will."

We shared a laugh over the hopelessness of living in Florida, and the fact that there is a snowball's chance in hell of this referendum being defeated.

And that was it.

I feel I've done my (admittedly miniscule) part today.
