goodbye Wendy

"There could not have been a lovelier sight; but there was none to see it except a little boy who was staring in at the window. He had had ecstasies innumerable that other children can never know; but he was looking through the window at the one joy from which he must be for ever barred....

"I don't want to go to school and learn solemn things," he told her passionately. "I don't want to be a man"...

"It will be rather lonely in the evening," she said, "sitting by the fire."...
"It doesn't matter," Peter said.
"O Peter, you know it matters."
"Well, then, come with me to the little house."...

Wendy was married in white with a pink sash. It is strange to think that Peter did not alight in the church and forbid the banns...

Of course he did not strike. He sat down on the floor instead and sobbed; and Wendy did not know how to comfort him, though she could have done it so easily once. She was only a woman now, and she ran out of the room to try to think....

"He does so need a mother," Jane said.
"Yes, I know." Wendy admitted rather forlornly; "no one knows it so well as I."
