melodramatic eulogy for iPhone 3GS

Pasted from my messages;

I dismantled my iPhone TWICE!! twice! fricking bloody twice. my fingers are numb from trying to loosen the stupid screws; and guess what; power/lock button still does not work! it's a new damned power button. apparently more is broken. The irony! Five hours! though to be honest the second time took thirty five min to break apart and put back together.

Anyway; me and the iPhone will end our four/five year journey knowing that we have known each other more intimately then any iPhone and owner have ever known each other. I admire it's beautiful simplicity; it's purity (never was there a virus or a piece of malware); and it's resilience to the knocks of life (my weekly drops on concrete), today I come to understand not only why it was so spiritually robust (software), but also it's physical internal strength. I am reluctant to let it go; but the time is near; goodbyes must be said; the circle of life must go on and iPhone 3gs's must be left behind; but it shall never be forgotten; my first smartphone purchased in a world of no other smartphones; the phone which made desktop Internet a reality on portable devices; its legacy shall always live on....

I mean look at it; torn apart by an iept person twice in the last evening and still working... still trying to survive... it's almost like a life lesson.

PS; This is not just goodbye to the iPhone 3GS but to Apple; for now at least; I go from a nanny state; to an exciting open sourced world; but from now on the decisions to keep my data safe; to minimise bloatware, malware; viruses and adware; to think upon my usage will be entirely mine. Interesting isn't it, with great power comes great responsibility, with minimal responsibility comes minimal power; fair trade off; if you want an iPhone; don't complain about the lack of flexibility, look what it saves you from. I always said, iOS was designed for technically inept, middle class men; so they could browse for porn without they're locked down protected devices ever breaking down. I shall miss that peace of mind.
