When There's Nothing There

This past week was the usual- work, class, etc. lichifruit and sleepfighter came by on Sunday, we checked out some more of 12 Kingdoms. Decent show, very old school on a lot of levels. Mostly liking that it manages to steer clear of the Fushigi Yugi cliches. We started the longest arc before Izzy had to head out- so far seems to be a protracted look at the suffering of two characters we've never met before. God willing they get theirs by the end of the 17 episodes of this story.

Thursday night, went out to SF and met up with theotherchicago for an advance screening of this movie City Island. Hilarious flick centering on a Manhattan family with more baggage than the lost and found at Newark. Check it out if you get a chance, Andy Garcia is tremendous in it.

Saturday night, went downtown to check out Green Zone. It's not surprising to me that this movie hasn't done better in the states. I'm not saying most people are dumb, but- wait, no that is exactly what I'm saying. This movie tells the truth about the war in a way few mainstream Hollywood movies have had the balls to. It's dark, and it's depressing seeing how badly we fucked the dog on this war, but damn if it isn't worth a look. Assuming you don't already have more information on the war than you ever cared to have.

And today, checked out the 'erotic thriller' Chloe. Without giving away too much, this was a convoluted and highly character-driven piece about a wife that suspects her husband is cheating on her, so she enlists the help of a hooker to find out if he is. It relies on the audience's emotional interpretation of the characters, and it does a good job of doing that. The characters' actions don't lead you to one absolute answer as to what they're feeling, and that open-endedness works in its favor.

WonderCon this weekend- I'm at the Cartoon Art Museum table, come holla.

the con of all cons, working hard/hardly working, at the movies
