Been the usual in the week- work, home, comics, readin' the new Dresden File... and of course, a few films. Saw The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Saturday night while my parents were seeing The Ghost Writer a few blocks away to my delight. It was miles above most book adaptations, but there was still the feel of the book missing. But then that was my personal take on it. God willing, David Fincher can get a better grip on it.
And I went to see How To Train Your Dragon (hah, just now realized the connection...) some cliched stuff, but for a kids movie, that was a damn fine film. Check this one out, folks- beautiful animation, great script and wonderful characters.
Oh, yeah, and I read the first Dark Wolverine collection. Amazing stuff. Daken's ability as a chess master is staggering, and the way we're left wondering about his sexuality just adds depth to the mystery of his character. Check this one out, it's a good bloody time.
And now more music:
All I said about the previous Stereolab record is apt when applied to "Chemical Chords":
"Silver Sands""Self Portrait With 'Electric Brain'" Low produces a brand of alt-rock very fittingly dubbed 'slocore'- it's perfect for kicking back with a book or simply cozying up next to the fire. "The Curtain Hits The Cast" is chill music if there was:
"Over the Ocean""Mom Says" The XX are an alternative group with just a touch of electronica in them. Their lyrics are sensual- with the constant references to sex and relationships, the album borders on a concept record about a couple going through a tumultuous time. Both of them want to stay together, but they're mulling over their oddities and minutiae. And, just to illustrate how talented they are, I started daydreaming about passionate sex less than 30 seconds into the first number, the first song of the two below. It's an instrumental:
