Afie Kohn wrote a whole book about why competition is bad. I'm sure you've heard of it, "No Contest : The Case Against Competition."

I say that its relevant because it is a refutation of the behaviorist idea that extrinsic motivators are at all good for real learning/thinking.
Of course, the extension of his thinking would also exclude "encouragement" if that meant praise/rewards.
