Afie Kohn wrote a whole book about why competition is bad. I'm sure you've heard of it, "No Contest : The Case Against Competition."

If not, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0395631254/sr=8-8/qid=1150419679/ref=pd_bbs_8/002-3049052-6753637?%5Fencoding=UTF8

rather than judge themselves by how they're doing against other kidsSince you mention this as well, Alfie's book, Punished By Rewards, is a very relevant resource as well ( ... )

If I land this piece, I'll definitely check that out sooner rather than later.

Only tales of misery and woe over at yours, huh?:)

Yes. And beatings, many beatings....

(mostly of me)

I'm going to ask my f-list too. I'd be interested to see if they had any. I'm still thinking. I know that ruby is not motivated by competition in the slightest. As far back as I can remember competition has had a silencing effect on me. In both cases it's more sad than funny. I guess a funny person could make the sadness sound funny...

No funnies for ya, but yay you! Wren actually doesn't want to play soccer again this year because she's too old for 'clinic' and would be in what they call the 'competitive' league. I'll email you an account of an incident involving competitive parents and the summer reading program -- it isn't funny really, but is illustrative of the anti-competition pov.

Thanks-- I think I'll just send them whatever anecdotes I get and see what they say-- I didn't see it being much of a kneeslapper type of piece anyway, you know?

looking forward to your email!
