Hurtling towards the end of the year

Can't believe it's nearly November.

I had a day out in London last weekend and went along to the British Museum's Celts exhibition. It was extremely well curated, objective, measured and addresed why the origins of Celtic identity remain relevant today. It also had a couple of extremely famous object on display like the Batersea Sheild and the Gundestrup Cauldron. It was just a tiny bit over earnest and souless. I can only presume someone at the British Museum has taken the criticism of the random nature of the Viking exhibit to heart. To be honest though the Viking exhibit was more fun.

A couple of weeks ago lonelybrit and I went to see Crimson Peak which is a film mainly designed to appeal to students doing a Gothic Literature module. The visuals are stunning, the acting from all is top notch and it has some really interesting subversions of both the genre and cinema in general but it could have been a bit more polished I feel. The first half hour in particular is not great and a bit too much like watching a Lifetime ye olden days movie. It is also no more a horror film than Wuthering Heights is so marketing fail on that front. It's quite good but it could have been great if the dialogue had been given a once over for a cheese check.

On the DVD front I have recently watched Nightcrawler which has an absolutely belting performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and the Peruvian Undertow where the 'ghosts as metaphor' is done in an extremely more subtle, effective and moving way than Crimson Peak, where the ghosts are more marketing tool than metaphor!

The BFI are currently hosting a greatest screen couple of all time poll if anyone's interested. There is both a film and a TV section. I voted for Clarence and Alabama from True Romance for film and Steve and Fiona from Shameless for TV.
