Besides the
fried new potatoes with steamed garden babies, I cooked a mess of assorted garden greens, with grated daikon (from garden), grated onion (not from garden), garlic, salt, and balsamic vinegar. And a...thing...of leftover refried beans, leftover mashed potatoes, ten tiny packets of croutons I found in the breakroom, and the last of the eggs. I'm not an organic cook, vegetarian, or locavore; I'm an opportunistic scavenger.
Anyway, the...thing...will go well in/under the bean stew/soup from a couple of days ago.
In other cooking news, it was housemate's birthday so I made cake: a multi-ginger cranberry-almond spice cake (the dried cranberries were reconstituted in OJ and ginger, and the cake had candied ginger, dried ginger, and ginger ale, along with ground almonds, cinnamon, allspice, etc., and the usual eggs-flour-sugar to hold it all together. Long low bake in a bundt pan. It turned out well - not as heavy as my usual "breakfast cake", which was intentional since it was plenty warm this weekend.
But it's always the right weather for a good frosting, so I made cream cheese frosting to go with the cake: 2 bricks cream cheese, 1 stick softened butter, 2 cups powdered sugar, 1 t flavoring). It's a heart attack wrapped in diabetes, but it is oh so very good.
Housemate, head-injury D, and I had a "working gaming" Saturday: housemate was learning how to teach a couple of newer games before he has to teach them to strangers at Origins. Navegador was interesting - I'd like to play that again at least once. Pantheon was less interesting, but fine as a lighter game for the strategy boardgaming crowd.
