Criticism of hunters who use assault rifles puts writer’s career in jeopardy (Originally from MSNBC.com)
SEATTLE - Modern hunters rarely become more famous than Jim Zumbo. A mustachioed, barrel-chested outdoors entrepreneur who lives in a log cabin near Yellowstone National Park, he has spent much of his life writing for prominent outdoors magazines, delivering lectures across the country and starring in cable TV shows about big-game hunting in the West.
Zumbo's fame, however, has turned to black-bordered infamy within America's gun culture -- and his multimedia success has come undone. It all happened in the past week, after he publicly criticized the use of military-style assault rifles by hunters, especially those gunning for prairie dogs.
"Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity," Zumbo wrote in his blog on the Outdoor Life Web site
Since I immigrated to the USA from Hong Kong, one thing that kind of bothers me is that I never really feel safe here. You hear people get shot / murdered all the time no matter where you are. I'm in the SF bay suburb, technically safer than west Oakland but I still never feel the same as I was in Hong Kong (where civilian have no right to bear arm)
Now I guess if you were a right-wing republican and gun support enthusiast you'd probably come up with 1234567 million of reasons to convince / even bash me why you think gun control is just a bad liberal political agenda. I don't give a shit about the crime statistics but I honestly do not think that giving civilian rights to bear arm creates a better and more peaceful society. People simply do stupid and terrible shit from time to time regardless whether they had a previous criminal background.
Giving people the ability to shoot other people is just stupid. (yeah I heard the self-defense argument, but how often do you see the social unrest like the Hurricane Katrina aftermath? If we take away gun from people in the first place we won't even have problems where people shooting each other)
I find it just really odd that people in USA claim that they're peace and freedom loving individuals but then they like to be able to keep gun in everyone household. Are Americans simply paranoid, insecure or just controlling?
The above article really gets me because the outdoor life writer career is basically down the shithole because he said something that offended people owning military assault rifles for hunting. Now I can be biased here because I do not support hunting in the first place (think about one day human being hunted by some other life forms). I also understand that hunting some times can actually help balance wildlife population. But there really is no reason why people to use assault rifles to hunt animals. (I ponder will one day we use grenade for hunting??)
Why are human so bloodthirsty? How come bible thumper don't jump in and save the day? (I supposed that if you're religous nut you'd be pro-life on everything) What is wrong with this world sometimes? Why do we let extremist influences our government? Don't we all human at least share some "normal" common values?
