Well it's 2:30am, and I'm dead tired. However, Aryn is in the other room reading. She told me that she couldn't finish our game of Monopoly because she was too tired (never mind the fact that I was winning), so we had to quit. But now she wants to read instead of going to bed. And she told me that she doesn't want me to go to bed first. I still can't believe that I'm always the one who wants to get bed first. But I digress.
I have to say that I'm incredibly annoyed with the IRS right now. I read today that each year the IRS fails to collect $300 billion worth of taxes or something ridiculous like that. I'm starting to understand how that could be the case.
My personal run in with the IRS started in July. I get a letter from them saying that they had lost my tax return, so they asked me to send them another one. Okay, for starters, how on earth did they LOSE my tax return? I filed the stupid thing ELECTRONICALLY! I didn't know that was even possible. (Maybe I'll try that with them next year. "Sorry I didn't file a return; you see I lost all my W-2s and 1099s. I guess I can't pay taxes because I don't know how much I owe.")
So I print out another copy of my tax return and mail it to them, return receipt requested. I got the return receipt a week later, so I assumed life was good. Not so. I got another letter from them last week saying that since I failed to respond to their earlier leter, my return was invalid and I was being investigated for tax evasion. I'm like, "SAY WHAT? You lost my tax return TWICE!?! And now I'm the one being ivestigated for tax evasion?" Fortunately, I still had the return receipt, so I thought I had a pretty strong case. I mailed them yet another copy of my return, copies of both letters then sent me, and a copy of the return receipt. And I made a note to call them this week to make sure everything was sorted out.
It gets even worse, however. This week I got too more letters from the IRS. The first was a refund check for all the tax I paid in April. The second was a bill for the same amount they had just sent me, plus penalties and interest. AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! Apparently, they had received my second tax return after all. They declared my first return (which they lost) invalid, and hence they mailed me a refund check. Then they processed the duplicate return, and since I hadn't paid the balance due on that return by April 15, they charged me penalties and interest. So I called them and complained vehemently. They told me that I can void the refund check and mail it back to them, and they will cancel the balance due on my account. I'm preparing that letter right now. Hopefully this will finally end this mess. Keep your fingers crossed...
