A friend posted that he has discovered he has 1604 books, thanks to a cataloging program called LibraryThing. I keep track of what books I've read in a little notebook, which I periodically transcribe into a spreadsheet. (Almost 3000 books read since 1972, when I started recording them.) But I have no idea how many books we have; however, we have had to double stack the paperback SF. We used props made of brown gutter pipe (which is rectangular) and little wooden blocks. These hold the back row up high enough that you can see at least part of the titles. Getting rid of a bunch of old VCR tapes, children's books, and toys in the family room freed up a couple of shelves, so I'll be reshelving the hardback SF Real Soon Now.
Lydia has three completely full bookcases in her room (heavy manga habit) so either she needs more or it's time to ditch the Life Nature and Science books that are shelved there. The guest room is a disaster, with the full-wall bookcase full, three small bookcases full, and several boxes of my antique women's magazines and National Geographics (courtesy of Karl's dad) on the floor. There are probably a hundred books in the master bedroom, scattered around various places. The living room even has a few, but I'm going to move them to make room for more 3-D art. The office library is almost full but has been catalogued using Readerware.
And everything has been through multiple purges. Still we buy more. Time to buy the Hugo nominees!
Recently I learned about Book Thing in Baltimore, a warehouse where you can donate books and magazines for a tax deduction and/or browse their categorized collection and take home anything you want, free. (They have a web site.) We trucked up several boxes full of stuff and came home with only an armfull, so the trip was a net win.
My name is Erica and I'm a bookaholic.
