Lydia got into the International Baccalaureate program at Laurel High! This means she'll have a challenging, interesting curriculum accompanied by other students who are interested in learning, not goofing off. She also will get to study abroad part of her senior year in the country of her choice. She's over the moon!
She has to pass an Algebra I exam at the end of May to complete her qualification, but she's been getting As in the course this year so we don't think that the test will be an obstacle. There is also a one-week camp for kids going into the program at the end of July, so we have to tweak our Worldcon travel schedule a bit. Guess I get to go to the Brad Paisley concert on the 25th after all!
The big bonus here is that Lydia won't get stuck in the neighborhood high school, which has discipline problems and a low graduation rate. Not that I think she wouldn't graduate, but it speaks to the interest in academics among the students at that school. It draws from some neighborhoods with gang activity, so we were worried about that factor, too. Again, not that I think Lydia would get involved in a gang, but it can't be a good influence on the atmosphere of the school.
And Lydia will graduate from the high school that Karl went to. That will be a first in our family: a legacy student!
