Five Questions Meme

...and it comes around again! mercy_myst asked me stuff. It is below!

1. Who is your longest LJ friend and how did you meet?

That would be gradmuppet, who's responsible for me coming to LJ in the first place - way back in 2002. I met her in my high school Spanish 1 class. Let's remember that I was a wallflower in high school. gradmuppet, meanwhile - she was, and still is, one of the friendliest and most outgoing people I've ever met. Being new to the school, she came up to me sometime before class, sat on my desk, and said: "Hey! What's up?" I was pretty flattered to be singled out like that, to be honest. Most people at the time didn't notice me (and that was usually how I liked it). Anyhow, friendship ensued. I don't get to see her all that much anymore, which bums me out. And she needs to post way more than she does! *pokes her*

2. Who is your closest LJ friend and how did you meet them?

krisology. I met her through a Star Wars roleplaying chatroom circa 1999. The Phantom Menace had just come out and I was 13. My family had just gotten dial-up internet, and my folks become increasingly annoyed at the amount of time I spent battling the Sith through text as Jedi-Ali. (I know, LOL all you want. I do.) But for an anti-social and often bored 13-year-old, it made life EPIC. krisology was the one that made us all laugh whenever she logged on. Ten years (and many real-life visits) later: she's the closest friend I've ever had. She's seen me grow up, I've seen her grow up - it bonds people, ya know? I come to her with all my trivial and ridiculous thoughts on the minutiae of life, which I'm too afraid to bother other people with. But she listens. It's pretty amazing.

3. Are you happy in your job ... if you could do anything (professional), what would you like to do?

I'd say I'm fairly happy. It's work, they pay me, it's rarely stressful and (most importantly) doesn't come home with me. I never pictured myself in a legal environment, but it fits my skill set pretty well - lots of reading and analysis - and I'm learning tons as I go. Things don't get boring around here... our legal system is too crazy for that.

I'd like to be in a publishing environment; I'd love to be an editor. That was what I first set out to do - and I almost got a job as a copy editor with a pretty fly company early on. But at the last minute they restructured, and my position went out the window. Convenient! I love typography and text design almost as much as I love reading and writing, so that combo was very appealing... maybe someday I'll seek it out again. For now, I'm trying to get serious about other things.

4. How did you meet your husband?

Check it out, it's documented on LJ! :) The short version: I went on a retreat with my church in 2005. He carpooled with my roommate and I, and on the drive up, we discovered we had an unholy amount in common - from silly geeky stuff all the way to ethics, worldview and God stuff. He kept finding me during the retreat and we'd talk for hours. Afterwards, the unofficial dating began, which at first scared the hell outta me but soon felt like the most natural thing in the world. A mere three months later, we decided we could no longer picture our lives without each other, and started discussing marriage. Of course, it didn't happen for another 3 years - we wanted to wait till I graduated college. But things worked out just as we dreamed they would - in June 2008, one month after graduating college, I married him, and it was the best thing I ever did. I still can't believe how lucky I am. He's the most kickass male I've ever encountered; explaining why would take too long. I've already overstayed my welcome with this question!

5. What are two of the most beautiful songs you can think of and two of the worst?

Oh man, what a difficult question! I just know I'll be omitting some piece of music that's had a significant effect on me in the past, but let's see. Off the top of my head...

Two of the most beautiful:

  • "Hope of Israel" by Michael W. Smith, which is a simple, instrumental piano piece backed by minimal orchestration. I first heard it when I was really young - maybe 11 or 12? - and it's brought me near tears many times since. MWS wrote it after a trip to the Holy Lands years ago. (This is the side of him that most people don't know about but that I treasure: MWS the composer, not the poppy Christian songwriter.) I've been looking for the sheet music for years, but it's never been printed. Now that I've got my shiny new digital piano, I'm making it a goal of mine to transcribe a version for solo piano. It's been such an important song in my life.

  • "Beloved" by VNV Nation. It may be electronica, but it has heart to spare, and is an example of masterful songwriting - not a common thing in this genre. The melody, lyrics, and sheer scope of the track carry me away. I feel so close to it; I relate to every line and expression. It's poetry in constant motion, and when Ronan sings "eternity awaits," I believe him.

Two of the worst:

  • "Best I've Ever Had" by Drake. When I first heard this song I thought it was meant to be a joke. Then I met people who took it seriously... and liked it. The fact that the chorus is supposed to be a compliment to a girl is at once so absurd and depressing I almost can't decide how to react. Laugh it off? Break things? And the music is just obnoxious. It's beyond me why people like this get famous, and are considered attractive by certain segments of womankind. But, y'know, one person's trash is another's treasure... I guess...

  • "Tear You Apart" by She Wants Revenge. This was a big deal on KROQ back in the day when I used to listen to KROQ, and I even had the unfortunate experience of seeing this band cavort about onstage at a festival I attended once. "Not my thing" would be an understatement. The music is so dull and monotonous (there is no melody) that it numbs my brain. If that was supposed to be the effect, well done. But somehow I imagine they were trying to go for something MINIMALIST and META. Don't even get me started on the lyrics...

You know the drill: comment and I'll fire some questions your way. :)
